Serious Confustion II: Why can't Bayless shoot?

Point 1: Bayless is a very hard worker and "gym rat"
This has been mentioned in numerous O-live articles.

Point 2: Bayless can't shoot.
Bayless shot .414, .315 from the 3pt line this season.

Question:
Throughout the annals of NBA history, every player who gained the "gym rat" moniker was a good-to-great shooter, except Bayless. Is Point 1 wrong. Are the stats in Point 2 not representative for some reason? I do know that I don't cringe when he shoots the 3, but I don't really expect it to go in either. What's the Problem?? Will he become a good-to-great shooter, or is he doomed to mediocrity?

Really, I'm not trying to dog on the guy, I'm just really confused. Why doesn't all of his hard work pay off?

Bayless is fine for a new NBA player, give him some time to develop. If anything this topic should be about Webster and Rudy, two guys who've had tons more experience than Bayless playing at the higher level.

 

Webster and Rudy are actually good shooters. I'm not dissing Bayless's overall game, just his shooting. So, you think it will get better. I hope you're right (and I think you are, too).

 

Martell and Rudy are far better shooters than Jerryd, and have nearly twice the range.

Jerryd will never be a threat from behind the arc, and is too short to get many layups except on a fast break, but if he wasn't so fixated on drawing the foul every time he'd get a lot of easy mid-range jumpers.

 

Well, his 3P% was .259 in his rookie season. This season, taking more of them, he pushed it up to .315.

He's a couple of percent away from being around average, and he's 21. I guess we'll see.

 

Maybe you guys are right, but maybe you are wrong. I hate to compare them right now since the other two have been in the league a while and I expect it from them.

But conversely, once BRex gets some more moves in on his drive, I think he'll be pretty deadly with mid-range shots, to driving.

 

I think his shot has improved and he's still extremely young. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

 

It can't help his shooting percentage when he has 2-3 of his shot attempts blocked out of the gym many nights.

 

We didn't have time to wait for Sergio. He was 22 last season and his 3FG% was .325. (With the Kings this season it was .357.) The .325 wasn't better than the .315 due to more playing time. Sergio got fewer minutes last season than Bayless got this season.

Time to give Patty those minutes and see what he can do.

Small sample size, but it's encouraging. Playoffs are where you want people to show up, and when it matters (see last year for examples of our team disappearing), and he definitely did.

 

Anyone remember how bad of shooter Tony Parker was when he came into the league? Drop off him and protect the lane, force him to shoot 15+ feet out.

That's because Sergio sucked completely at everything related to basketball. No exceptions. There was nothing he did on the court better than the average fan.

That's why there was no time to wait for him!

I'm moderately pleased with Bayless' improvement in his jumpshot this year, it's still nothing I'd want him taking all the time and I hold my breath whenever he hoists one up at the rim, but the most bothersome thing seems to be his mechanics; he uses a kind of weird leaning backward shot put style from under his chin, instead of flicking the ball from over his head and he doesn't rise up in a pure vertical motion. He is a worker though, so you never know.

 

good mechanics have something to do with draining J's but we've seen plenty of funky jump-shooters draining in the league... having good feel for shooting matters a great deal too. Albeit in pickup games for the most part, but I've always had a good J even when I was 4' nothing and shooting straight over the top with both hands. With good form and near 6', I've only improved my jumper... but thats my focus.

JB's form is close enough to right IMO, and I haven't noticed him drifting so much... I think he focuses more opportunities to finish at the rim and settles for the J. Whenever he finishes at the rim he releases a scream like thats what it's all about for him. I don't know whether it's in him, but most guards do most of their scoring outside of 5' and I think he'd benefit greatly by adjusting his focus to where he can get realistic good looks at the hoop

Thank you for bringing some reality to this thread. I was extremely encouraged by Bayless, Webster and Batum during this series.

Really though we should all be making sacrifices to the injury gods that Oden and Roy are healthy all next regular and post season.

I hear the injury god loves sacrifices with the initials KD. I'm told that as he has been prevented from landing the injury he so desperately craves on a certain skinny SF, he will prevent all injuries for a decade on our boys if we only get KD on the altar.
