"The sting always feels the same, Matt Capps said. He tries to leave the loss at the ballpark, but he knows he can't. Late Wednesday night, he knew he would relive the moments he wanted to change, the pitches he wished he could throw again. For the first time as a Washington National -- and, he knows, not the last -- Capps felt it Wednesday night.

Capps sometimes invited danger during his first month as the Nationals closer, but he had not succumbed to it until the 10th inning of the Nationals' 7-6 loss to the Atlanta Braves before 15,616 at Nationals Park. Capps suffered his first loss with Washington by allowing the game-winning run in the 10th, on an RBI single by Matt Diaz.

His games here had always ended with high-fives with his catcher and handshakes with his teammates. He had been nearly perfect, 11 for 11 in saves, one run in 15 1/3 innings. Dominance, Capps knows, is less of a requirement for a closer than resilience.

"Tough pill to swallow," Capps said. "When it's all said and done, that's what I got to do. A 3-2 ballgame tomorrow, I've got to go out there with a clean slate and go out and do my job." "
