"With one swing of the bat, Colorado third baseman Ian Stewart put an end to several Padre streaks.

Stewart led off the 12th Wednesday night with an opposite-field homer against Tim Stauffer, giving the Colorado Rockies a 6-5 victory at Petco Park before the remnants of a crowd of 17,121.

Gone was Stauffer's season-opening run of 17 1/3 scoreless innings.

Gone was the Padres streak of five straight series wins dating back to a Petco Park sweep of Arizona April 14-16.

By driving a 2-and-0 changeup 382-feet into the first rows of seats in left, Stewart dropped the Padres into a first-place tie with San Francisco in the National League West.

"That was a tough one," admitted Padres manager Bud Black.

"Tim just left a changeup out over the plate. Stewart has the power to drive the ball to all fields."

Wednesday's decisive run was the first allowed this season by Stauffer, who still has an glossy earned run average of 0.49.

"He's pitched great," Black said of Stauffer, who was working on the longest active scoreless innings streak in the majors when Stewart connected."
