But does it really matter? Unless Prince is in the race for the Most Improved Defender or Defender of the Year, look at team defense.

They both are good from outside.</div>Tayshaun has the better jumper..

Prince has trouble getting that mid range shot off. He needs time to do his form. Howard has a quicker trigger on that shot and it is easier for him to score because of it. Howard is a damn good shooter. Just look at his stats. He is even a better slasher.

Better flasher but Prince is one of the better shooters in the League. He has a better mid-range then Howard.

Haven't we been through this before?Anyways, they are about as close as you can get. I'd take Howard as he's a longer more athletic defender, even if Prince is the better defender right now.Howard is a better slasher, and a much better rebounder, and both can score pretty well, with Prince probably having the slight edge at scoring right now.But Howards 3 point shot is better, and is only getting better as the playoffs go on.If Howard's mid range shot gets better there would be more of a gap...but at this point I give Howard the slight edge as the better overall player, mainly because of his length, athleticism, and rebounding and slashing ability.

And for that I'd say Howard...far more of a difference than the original question.Prince and Howard are roughly the same age...but the Pistons are an older team than the Mavs...so when Billups, Wallace, and Sheed, and even Hamilton all start to decline, the Mavs still have Harris, Daniels, Diop, maybe even marshall and Powell too, that are all younger than Howard. And Dirk is only 28, 2 years older than Howard. So the better career will go to Howard, even if Prince will have a title, or 2 under his belt.

Josh Howard is more talented, but I'm not sure, I think Tayshaun will have at least 2 more titles and he is still a great defender and a good scorer who plays his role.

I have to go with Tay. Tayshaun is the better scorer and defender. Howard is more athletic and is the better shooter. Both fit their team well and are the future for their squads.

Sorry Dsoung. This topic has already been made But since there has been some good discussion on this one I will just merge it.I will take Tayshaun. He can get inside just as good as Howard IMO. He can finish with a dunk or put it up over the glass. He has long, lanky arms and is one of the League's premier defenders. He also has a better jump shot then Howard. He can hit the 3 pointer. I have reason to believe if he werent on the Pistons he'd be averaging 20+ ppg.

As previously pointed out, both guys defense is good, but vastly overrated...and if you think about it, Tayshaun has the luxery of having a great defensive team, while the Mavs are just now becoming good defensively...so you could make the argument that Josh Howards D, while overrated, is actually better.Tayshaun does have a better mid range jumper at this point and, but Howard is the much better well rounded player.Look at the stats:Tayshaun 14.1 ppg, 4.2 reb, 2.3 apg, .7 stl, .4 blks in 35.3 mpg.Howard 15.6 ppg, 6.3 reb, 1.9 apg, 1.15 stl, .3 blocks in 32.5 mpg.Very comparible stats, but if you really look at them it isn't even close.I was actually surprised to see that Howard is better at getting steals than Prince on that team full of defensive monsters. It also shows that Howard does everything he does in almost 3 full minutes less a game...and that he is in fact a better scorer and a way better rebounder. Now sure Prince has better apg numbers, but it's .4 better, not that much at all.And Prince should be doing better as the Mavs have more offensive weapons and a deeper bench, while Prince has to play alot night in and night out.I think they are both comparable players, and perfect fits for their team, but Howard does have better stats in less minutes, on a more talented, if not quite a better, team.Plus Howard has already proven he can take over a game, even a playoff game in the World Champs building...I haven't seen Prince do that yet.

When you play for the Pistons your numbers are obviously going to go down. Especially when you are the 4th option on the Pistons.

I agree, but the same can be said about Josh...he is sometimes the 4th option, sometimes the second...The Mavs actually have more scorers than the Pistons, and Howard has no plays run for him, so everything he gets, he earns...He'd probably average over 20 ppg if the Mavs had set plays for him.

I agree they dont set plays for him that much. But the Mavs are great at sharing the ball around and getting everyone a chance for a basket. He does get alot of touches.

Howard>Prince. Howard is Dallas's second option to Prince's 3rd or 4th option for the Pistons. Big difference. The Pistons don't get much scoring from their frontcourt so Hamilton and Billups are forced to score a lot. Prince would not score more with anyone else unless it was a very bad team. Also most teams put their best swing man defender on Howard while in Detroit they put their best defender on Hamilton or Billups. Howard also dominates the boards and plays bigger at SF than Prince.

I think Josh Howard's better because he's a better offensive player and rebounder. Tayshaun's not that great offensively and when he scores he's left open a lot. Howard's a pretty good defender, probably not as good as Tayshaun, but is still very solid
