GLOUCESTERSHIRE captain Alex Gidman hailed David Payne’s “fantastic performance” after the teenager entered the record books in the Clydesdale Bank 40 defeat against Essex.

The England under-19 international finished with 7-29 from six overs - the best limited overs bowling figures in Gloucestershire’s history - including four wickets in as many balls at Chelmsford.

In a remarkable last over of the Essex innings, left-arm seamer Payne, 19, removed England international James Foster, centurion Grant Flower, Tim Phillips and Jaik Mickleburgh in successive balls before Chris Martin was run out in the last ball.

Payne had earlier dismissed Mark Pettini, Ryan ten Doeschate and Graham Napier.

Gidman said: “I’ve never seen anything like it and I don’t expect to again in my career.

I really wanted for Gloucestershire to win, they've got a good side. They didn't perfome, good victory for Essex.
