good for him.. met him at the fan fest last year.. really nice dude. Asked where I was from, and he knew Hood River was big on windsurfing and everything. Seemed like a real personable dude.

It wouldn't be the first time. Rick Adelman >>>Mike Schuler.

I've never been that impressed with Dean . . . but I wish him the best and hope he gets a head coaching opportunity (just not with the Blazers)

The one positive thought I get that if one of Portlands assistants leave, that possibly we might be able to bring in an assistant who is an offensive specialist to help this team. Some of the best coaches in the league, are good because they know what they are good at and delegate authority to other coaches are better coaches at different parts of the game. Some examples are Dick Harter and Tom Thibodeu basically being the defensive head coaches. Tex Winters coaching the triangle. Pete Carril was the offensive coach when Adelman was in Sacramento.

It would create an opening where say an Eddie Jordan who is considered a Princeton motion offense specialist, could be brought in. Eddie Jordan wasn't a very good head coach. But he is considered a very good Princeton offense expert.

I hope he gets the ATL job. There's gotta be a reason why Monty pretty much took over the lead asst role this season during Nate's injury. :devilwink:

Demopolos was given the team on the road trip. Monty coached when the got back home. If anything, Dean was trusted more, since coaching on the road is more difficult.

How many recent NBA championships have been won by back door screens and three point shooting? I realize Pete Carril was a coach for Sacto, but they didn't run a true Princeton offense under Adelman when they were good. They incorporated parts of it, but then again, they never even made an NBA finals.

I'm curious how you judge assistant coaches without being at practice.

I think that was more of a tenure/time served kinda' thing. Dean is definitely OLD SCHOOL! Good luck to him.

Could be. My point was that Dean was given the HC role the first game after Nate couldn't coach.

I was wondering the same thing, but I decided that Dean is too frumpy-looking on the bench.

There is more to the Princeton offense than that. It is a motion offense, and isn't too far off from what Boston runs now. Sacramento ran this style, and it definitely wasn't all back screens and 3 point shots. I think you have actually been watching the Princeton team, which is comprised mostly of non athletic players who are incapable of anything but back screens and 3 point shots. Teams with actual talent and athletic players, get to the rim regularly with cuts to the paint.

That doesn't seem all that impressive. He's been living in Portland what, 4 years now? And he knows there is windsurfing in Hood River?
Probably he knows the name of that big mountain south of Hood River, too.

Reading as many articles and interviews about the Blazers and watching when an assistant coach gives an interview. Might not be accurate, but that is my opinion. All I said is I've never been impressed with him, not that he is terrible. Have you seen him give an interview?

Note: Many posters have given the opinion that Monty is a good assistant coach . . . I think that as well. In fact I'll go out on a limb and say I'm sure that Monty is a good assistant coach eventhough I've never been to a practice.
