"The latest move to try to help struggling Gordon Beckham had him batting ninth Wednesday against the Los Angeles Angels, the first time he has been in that spot this season.

''I told him, 'Please get one hit so I don't have to answer questions about you every day,''' manager Ozzie Guillen said. ''We've tried everything for this kid and nothing's worked. I don't like to see my players struggle.''

Beckham went 0-for-2 with a walk in the 3-2 loss. He admitted the continuing questions about his hitting -- he's batting .102 with 16 strikeouts in May -- have added to the mental strain, but he acknowledged it's part of playing in the major leagues.

''It's not easy answering questions when you're struggling, but I can either feel sorry for myself or work harder,'' he said. ''I know I can play. I have in the past.''

Beckham's problems now are almost certainly mental, hitting coach Greg Walker said."
