"For their next act the Mets will shoot Angel Pagan from a cannon and watch him perform a midair triple somersault.

That's entertainment, but no guarantee you will win a ballgame. Pagan and the Mets were big-top circus acts last night, just not nearly good enough to beat the Nationals.

On a night Pagan circled the bases for an inside-the-park home run and initiated the 10th triple play in franchise history, the Mets were left to ponder just another loss, 5-3 at Nationals Park.

"There's no doubt that when you're losing ballgames, you get tired of that," Pagan said after the Mets fell to 5-14 on the road. "For sure we are playing hard. We are giving everything we've got, but things are not going our way right now."

R.A. Dickey and his knuckleball fared just fine, but the Mets' offense was MIA, as usual, and the bullpen faltered late. The Mets are 1-6 on a road trip that has included stops in Florida and Atlanta and privately have to wonder how ugly it will get when they return home to face the Yankees and Phillies after concluding this series here tonight.

Pagan made a shoestring catch on Cristian Guzman's bloop in the fifth, turning it into the Mets' first triple play since 2002. Pagan caught the ball and threw to the infield, where catcher Henry Blanco retrieved the throw and flipped to second base -- Nyjer Morgan was standing there, having run from first. Livan Hernandez had run from second to third. Jose Reyes then threw to first base to complete the trifecta."
