"The Cubs bullpen remains in a state of flux as Esmailin Caridad was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday with inflammation in his right forearm and elbow and the Cubs contacted veteran right-hander Bob Howry.

Caridad will have an MRI, assistant general manager Randy Bush said, but sources believe he will be out for a prolonged period of time.

Jeff Stevens, who had a 2.60 ERA in 12 appearances at Triple-A Iowa, was called up to take his roster spot.

Caridad was 0-1 with an 11.25 ERA in eight relief appearances this season. He previously was on the disabled list from April 12 through May 8 with a right forearm strain.

"We brought up Stevens, and they say this young man's slider has gotten a lot better," manager Lou Piniella said. "He has been throwing the ball very well."

Caridad started the season as the Cubs' primary right-handed setup man, a decision that has backfired on them, leading to the ill-fated experiment to move Carlos Zambrano to the bullpen."
