So Greg Oden is eligible for an extension this offseason. I was wondering how many of us would be willing to offer him a decent sized contract extension.

    uh...yeah...

no brainer to OFFER an extension, the real issue will be with what he & his agent think they should be getting...

the question should be how much to offer, not if an offer should be given. My hope is that Oden signs a 3 year 20mil extension. He will likely get more than that, but I think that would be good. He may opt to not go for an extension at all if he thinks he can stay healthy for a season. A fully healthy Oden (and expected to stay healthy) is a Max or near Max player. But as it stands now, he should try to make his money being sponsored by Pfizer. I think the best thing for all involved is a two or three year extension.

Of course you offer an extension. How much and for how long - are the sticky details yet to be determined. I think, based on his # of games played, injuries, etc., we may not be forced to pay him full max. But it will be a negotiation like with Roy and Aldridge, it'll include positioning on both sides and it'll look grim before it looks good.

But, yes, he was the consensus #1 pick in 2007 and he'll be offered a contract.

I voted yes. I think him and his agent would be interested to get locked in before the new CBA, just in case. Offer him something with games played incentives, which would fall under the unlikely to receive category at this point. I'd also want a team and player option after 3 years, so if he over performs, he can opt out, and get more money, and if he is constantly hurt, we can bail. 3 year guaranteed, 21 million, with 3 million per year if he plays over maybe 60-65 games. Something around 5 year, 55 million, with incentives being hit. Not certain how to work out escalation of contract for last two years, with incentives.

I think it goes by years on the board - not number of posts.

Isn't it based on rep from other posters?

IE, everyone loves his 73 posts.

If the team can lock him up for 4 years at 8 million with a team option for a fifth year or 5 years fully guaranteed at 7 million, then go for it, otherwise I'd rather let him go into restricted free agency and let the market dictate his salary

(I don't believe anybody is going to break the bank for this guy).

If he wants Lamarcus money he can GTFO.

I wonder if Oden signs for a smaller contract (vs. a near max contract), if that will take some pressure off him and allow him to jsut be one of the guys.

It seems with all the hype from the draft, he carries himself like he has the weight of the world on his shoulders. I don't think that has come out in his play as he was playing at a pretty high level before the last injury. But I don't get the feeling GO is enjoying the whole basketball team thing or being a Blazer.

Sign for less money than LMA, meaning not as much is expected out of him, and maybe he shows signs of enjoying just being one of the team. Or maybe greg is just greg no matter what . . . again if continues to grow from wher he left off, I guess that is all that really matters. Boy I just did a circle, but I typed all this so I figure I got to post it . . .

I say 8 mil a year for a 4 year extension, would expire at the same time as Roy and Aldridge... Add lots of incentives for games played, playoff performance and allstar appearences.

Why are we talking about how much he is going to sign for before he plays next season? His performance is going to determine his salary. Right now, I think 7 Million a year would be overpaying him. If he plays like he did at the beginning of the year for an entire season then he will get 10 a year easily...we just extended Marcus @ 10.5 a year if I'm not wrong.

Question: What's the base of Greg's extension?

I couldn't help but laugh and shake my head at the title of this thread either.

That said, 3-4 years in the $20M-$30M range should do it.. Hopefully he'll still want to play in Portland.
