I didn't hate the Frye for Zach swap, as I thought Channing was a pretty promising young guy in New York, but mostly you're right, this team could have definitely used a little more Z-Bo with all of Oden's injuries, and LaMarcus' tendencies to drift out to 18 feet. Hindsight, 20/20 and all that.

Rehashing the Zach trade for the 43rd time this month aside, I heard that an actual FBI informant has named Zach as being heavily involved in this ring. This isn't toking with Sheed and Damon in a Hummer. This is go-to-pound-me-in-the-ass-prison-if-I'm-convicted sort of stuff. The Escalade is one thing, but the storage units, depending on what they found in them, are very hard to explain away.

Zach could be in very deep shit here. If he's indicted by a grand jury, will Stern suspend him for an entire season, or perhaps even longer?

You are assuming that Zach would accept being a back up, which is incorrect. Zach believes he is a star. Stars don't come off the bench.

Anyone who believes Stat-Bo is a quality player thinks the NBA works like a fantasy league. It doesn't and Z-Bo's empty stats wouldn't have helped Portland win any games last season.

Chemistry and ball movement are important to winning basketball games. Z-Bo is bad for chemistry and a black hole on offense.

He will never, ever again play a major roll on a winning basketball team.

I would take Rudy or Frye over that fat lazy shit bag any day of the week and consider myself lucky.

    Haha.

So bring Aldridge off the bench. Why is Aldridge guaranteed a starting spot, even assuming Zach is inflexible?

Mmm hmm. The Grizzlies would definitely have been better off without him this year.

    Haha.

    Ridiculous.

You sound like the Rasheed haters who claimed he was a cancer even as his team was winning the NBA title.

And your team would be lucky to make the playoffs and be eliminated in the first round of the playoffs... oh, wait. That's what happened.

Too bad your attitude is one that the Blazers had when they gave away Zach.

Yes, it was certainly a great season....considering how abysmal the Grizzlies have been over their history.

Compared teams that have ever had success it was yet another year of failure.

But hey, they would have made the playoffs in the Least. I guess that counts for something.

    No it doesn't.

If you want to believe that a dude that played zero defense, was a locker room cancer and a black hole on offense is a good player I suppose you can.

But I cannot concieve of a reason why you would.

Yes, Ed O is completely wrong on this one. Sometimes it's more than just someone's ability to put a basketball in a hoop. Zach can score, there's no doubt about that. However, he does nothing to make his teammates better and his off-court issues are a black mark for the franchise in the eyes of the community. Even if we had traded him for nothing, it would have been a good deal.

Don't under estimate how important good chemistry is to a team. Especially a very young one at the time. Zach was not exactly bringing in a lot of offers with his huge contract and baggage. Even though I was a Zach fan, he needed to be on the first bus out of town. I am guessing Blazer management knew a lot more than we did about some of his off the court habbits.

I was one of those people who had grown kind of tired of Zach and wasn't opposed to him being moved, but I was pretty shocked that they dumped for so little in return. I guess I bought the line at the time that this was the best deal they could get. that said, sure Zach has had his problems here and elsewhere, but Memphis apparently loves the guy, and he helped that team add 16 wins to its total from the year before (a team that did nothing to really add any additional talent because they wasted their 3rd pick on Thabust, and their core guys all pretty much played to the same level they did the year before). You can dislike Zach all you want for the negative things that were associated with him during his time in Portland, but sometimes players do change their game and mature as a player and in this case that translated to both more wins and a better offense with him on the floor for Memphis (+7 points per48 better with him on the court than off).

As for this drug smuggling thing, we should probably bear in mind that he hasn't even been charged with anything (yet) ... when/if he is, then we can start talking about what a detriment he is to his franchise and community.

If Memphis loves the guy, then I would expect their attendance to improve a little this year. I guess we will see.

We can start talking about what a detriment he is to the community any time we want. It doesn't matter whether he's charged with anything or not. Just ask his ex-neighbors over in Stafford.

Stafford is an extremely racist arm of LO, primarily ex-Californians in McMansions looking for a whiter land, but I'm sure that wouldn't influence their opinion of a few young black guys who like to party living just down the street from them. Used to be a nice farm area inhabited by normal folks.

Zach was an all-star this season. Roy had two appearances in recent years, and Rasheed had two appearances in 2000, 2001. Before that it was Clyde in 1994. That is over 16 years with only two players representing our franchise, and we gave away a possible third for nothing.

Grizzlies not changing plans -- including a Zach Randolph extension

Why would Z-Bo accept a pay cut? As far as I can tell, there are only 24 All-Stars a year, and almost all the other ones are on rookie scale or making max money. If this was a purely basketball decision, why would a 28-y/o All-Star PF who consistently puts up 20/10 have to take a pay cut?

Zach is probably an 85-90% max player, and a lot of that has to do with his off the court troubles; I doubt his name is much in demand around the league (despite his big numbers).

Being chosen to the all star game doesn't mean you are really any good.

For proof, please see Magloire, Jamal.
