Re: Soccer sucks. Soccer is amazing as a sport. There are more fantastic, enthralling matches each year between the Premiership, Champions League, Europa Cup, La Liga and Serie A then there are in the MLB, NBA and NFL combined. The World Cup, while not the BEST football you'll see (That's in the Champs League) is the most fun and dramatic football you'll see. I love it. I'd say that Germany was the most hated, good team... or Portugal (but they aren't that good)
Re: Soccer sucks. but I'm still cheering for Spain. I need some random quotes I can tell people regarding soccer. Like "oh yeah, (random player) is so overrated since the world finals". I should start a twitter account with soccer observations...kind of like a cheat sheet for posers.
Re: Soccer sucks. I hate soccer too. My best friend plays soccer and whenever we talk about it he says it's much more exciting and meaningful. When I watch I get so bored I would rather watch infomercials. It's just an incredibly boring sport to me. I will not watch any of the world cup or anything else. I really don't care that it's in the media though. I mean it is the most popular sport around the world right? Why should I care if I don't like it. I will say that Rugby should be the most popular worldwide sport. A million times better than soccer.
Re: Soccer sucks. That's only because it's the cheapest of the team sports to play. Goals can be made out of anything otherwords all you need is a ball. In third world countries thats pretty much the only thing to play. I find it extremely boring. Just a bunch of frantic behavior that sometimes leads to little or zero scoring.
Re: Soccer sucks. As opposed to baseball, static behavior with occasional jogging and little to zero scoring. Or NFL football, where they have to take a break every 10 seconds and have timeouts for the sole purpose of advertising. Or basketball, where the last 2:00 take 30:00 because of timeouts. I mean, if we are just going to reduce sports to clichés then no sport is safe.
Re: Soccer sucks. It's the primary sport in England, Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Germany, The Netherlands, Russia, Greece, etc... hardly 3rd world countries. It's not like if you took away the number of kids playing in dusty fields with a tin can for a ball and rocks for goalposts, soccer wouldn't STILL be the most popular sport in the world...
Re: Soccer sucks. I only got into soccer in 1994, when I was at UP for a semester and got paid to be part of the Adidas Club going to all of the soccer games. Got to see Tiffany Milbrett and Shannon MacMillan as 21 y/o's. Learned a little about the game after watching the World Cup earlier that summer. I find that I like "stylish" football more than a team. For instance, though instinctively I don't like Brazil, I'm amazed at their passing and ballhandling when I watch them. I don't really like the German/Scandinavian style of booming goal kicks downfield back and forth hoping to head it somewhere. I wish the US could pull its head out sometime. Being in Seattle, I've been to a few Sounders games and enjoy them, for the most part. But they don't have a very attacking style this year. And while I understand that European football is much better/higher quality/more exciting, I feel a bit like a poser picking a team now. I mean, Simmons did a big column a couple years ago where he ended up picking the Spurs. I guess if I had a team to follow it'd be easier to watch.
Re: Soccer sucks. I think/hope that the technical aspect of the Beautiful Game will become better now with the money being put into youth academies now. Still a lot of work to be done, but the tactics will get better, and then we will have more stylish football like you mentioned.
Re: Soccer sucks. I totally understand and respect peoples opinion that soccer can be a boring sport. But at least its a sport, unlike baseball, which is a boring event that happens way to much. Football is way to slow for me, I can't watch a football game. I can't watch 4 seconds of action and then 40 seconds of watching that action in replay over and over. The thing I like about most soccer leagues around the world, is that their is no playoffs. You play your season, and the team with the best record (or in the case of soccer, the most points) wins. I like this system because typically the best team in the league really will win. In the NFL a team can get lucky in a few games or play teams when they have a bad game and they can end up winning the Super Bowl. In soccer, you have to consistently bring it every single night. (I do understand that the NFL needs the playoffs due to the lack of games they play, but other sports dont need playoffs. I also understand that playoffs are big money makers, I just feel that after 82 games or 162 games, we should know who is the best team.)
Re: Soccer sucks. Soccer is to sports what a mobile is to a baby in a crib. Begins as mildly amusing then reveals itself as pointlessly predictable and unproductive. If I'm ever so bored that I consider watching soccer, I'll get an ant farm instead.
Re: Soccer sucks. It's also the sport of choice for all terrorist nations, and your fan dollars go to support terrorism against yourself.
