Avery Johnson has reached a verbal agreement with the New Jersey Nets to become their next head coach. Johnson coached the Mavericks through the 07-08 season. Devin Harris was reportedly pushing for the Nets to hire Johnson. http://sports.espn.go.com/new-york/nba/news/story?id=5268483
Seems like a really good move for NJ... and I have ALWAYS been critical of Avery as a a coach. NJ is a lot more talented than its record suggests. Johnson isn't going to work any wonders on offense but he'll give the young players a lot of structure, discipline, motivation, defensive intensity, and teach them how to win. He and Devin Harris were great working with one another in Dallas and NJ has a good low post scorer that AJ should love. Its just what the team needs right now. Long term I don't think hes a guy who will win you championships but he could get the Nets to a point where a great coach would be able to get them over the hump...then again I said that about Doc Rivers who is somewhat similar to Avery and look what happened there.
Avery Johnson is a good coach for younger players like New Jersey has if you ask me. He will put in discipline and is more of a guy for this team to look up to rather than how most guys in Dallas played against or with him.
The Nets will introduce Avery Johnson as the club's new head coach on Tuesday. President Rod Thorn says there was one reason why he thought Johnson was the right choice. "You talk to people, and it's a gut decision more than anything else after that," Thorn told The Star-Ledger. "You want someone who can fill the bill for what you need. No doubt about it, we need to get some pieces. And I think Avery will get the best out of whatever we end up with." Thorn likes that Johnson is a tough competitor and he believes the former player will bring that attitude to the Nets. "He had a long career in the league as a player, and was always known as a bright, tough, competitive guy as a player, and it's the same thing he brought to his coaching in Dallas. "And when we went through the interview process, I felt very good about him. He knew a lot about our team, the pluses and minuses of the players we have, he has a defensive philosophy that is something we definitely need, and I was also impressed with his attention to detail -- the plan that he has for practices, for shootarounds. He is a very prepared individual. I just felt he would be a good fit for what we need to do." Source: The Star Ledger
