NBA virgin, the college game is so different. Have someone with a sense of how to behave around NBA players.

Cleveland also needs a guy that knows how many minutes to use this person, and that person. I'm not sure they can get a great manager of personalities, but at least understand the best lineups to use. Defensive fundamentals, etc. Someone that can get along with the players.

I don't wanna crap all over them, but let me just say this. I know a lot about basketball... I spend way too much time talking about it, studying it, etc. And I have no freaking clue about who Chris Grant is. He might be great, don't get me wrong. But if I were Dan Gilbert, my first priority would be to get someone in there who was well known, had a good track record, and would be willing to camp out on Lebron's front lawn with "We need you, Lebron!" painted on his chest.

I'm a Cavs fan, and the first word that hit me after the decision was "who?"

That said, we get the guy behind the curtain to pretty much step our from behind said curtain and run the show. Grant's been heavily involved in almost every move they've made over the past few years, and to the LeBron point, he's a guy LeBron's familiar with.

He's stability in an organization in the midst of remaking itself in the course of three weeks.

Rather than wander aimlessly through the remainder of the offseason with no one at the helm but Gilbert, the Cavs get a guy who's been involved in building this team and can step right in. I think it's the right move.

The Yahoo article that Dan Gilbert tried his darndest to shoot down seemed to imply exactly the opposite. Yes, the man behind the curtain is finally stepping into the spotlight, but it's Dan Gilbert, not Grant. The only move we've seen from the team so far -- the contract offer to Tom Izzo and how it was handled -- seems all Gilbert.

I have to agree with Mike. It would seem to me that paying out the wahzoo for a marque GM probably and then stepping into the background, would probably have been Gilbert's strongest play. As it is, I think the Cavs narrowly dodged a deathblow when Izzo turned them down. I think Stackhouse probably provides a good thermometer for what NBA players think of college coaches:

Stackhouse: "So you're basically saying you don't think that it's a turnoff for him if they sign Izzo?"

Wesley: "No, I mean whoever is the coach in place at that time he's gonna roll with him. It's part of his decision process, I'm sure."

If the organization is in the midst of remaking itself, isn't that pretty solid evidence that its past moves haven't paid off, and therefore you might not want to promote a guy who's had a big hand in them?

Comparable to the Wizards? Ya that is a fair statement. Let's say they won't be like the Net's if or when James leaves.

As for no coach wants to be hired up, they are going to interview Byron Scott for the second time. I figure he will be the new coach, but ya, they really, really need a gm. A owner can't do it alone.

Izzo is good at being a college coach, but the game has changed so much since when Patino was coach.

VDN played the game. That is a big difference and coached as an assistant for a while. Monty Williams played a little, but he too coached as an assistant. They know the game. Now that being said it is an entirely different matter getting the players, the team to buy into your coaching philosophy.

Really? I must have missed that. Ok, you are right.

Chris Grant on Friday became the ninth general manager in team history. It came in bittersweet fashion as Grant became the immediate replacement for friend and mentor Danny Ferry, who stepped aside as GM.

Grant, an imposing but affable 6-10 former player for the University of San Diego, may not be well-known to Cavs fans. But over the past 15 years he has respected within the league. Grant worked for the Atlanta Hawks for 10 years before coming to the Cavs as one of Ferry's first hires in 2005.
