Warriors trade 34 pick to PDX for 44 pick and cash Per Steinmentz' twitter: http://twitter.com/msteinmetzcsn Just as I'm defending Riley in another thread lol. I would guess Cohan and the sale of the team is to blame for this though in all seriousness. Crappy trade. I'm not feeling the second round talent in this draft but that was a HIGH second rounder and coulda landed a talented player who slipped. In any event I doubt either the 34 or 44 pick will amount to much. Would be sirprised if a second rounder even made the roster and assuming the sale is still going on by Thursday I could see us just taking a Euro to stash away to keep a roster spot and some salary off the books.
Re: Warriors trade 34 pick to PDX for 44 pick and cash Wow, there's the big move we've all been anticipating! Playoffs, here we come!!
Re: Warriors trade 34 pick to PDX for 44 pick and cash Do the Warriors need $1 million in cash? No. Does Cohan want $1 million in cash? Why not. Is this a terrible move from a GM's perspective? Yes. Will Riley release a statement shortly defending this move? Probably. The worst part about this is not moving down 10 spots so Cohan can buy another yacht. The worst part is that #34 is a lot easier to package in a trade than #44 is. Trading Leverage goes down, Cohan's pocketbook goes up
Re: Warriors trade 34 pick to PDX for 44 pick and cash Horrible deal. There is definitely good talent left at #34 while once you get to the 40's, it really dies off and you have more of the European prospects start popping up.
Re: Warriors trade 34 pick to PDX for 44 pick and cash Do the Warriors not scout/choose high-end Euros? B/c if so, I could see them dropping 10 slots to let someone else pay a non-rookie-scale contract to someone (say, a foreigner who wouldn't come over here if he was picked 28th or something). The two foreigners I could see going there are both Centers, and you guys are basically set there with Biedrins and Randolph, right?
Re: Warriors trade 34 pick to PDX for 44 pick and cash no, i wouldn't say that biedrins and randolph mean we're set. biedrins (who i thought was at LEAST arguably the team MVP the previous 2 seasons) pretty much sucked last year. it was like a new, shittier version of himself. randolph barely played last season, and what time he did get, he didn't look anywhere near how he looked at the end of his rookie season. we need a strong frontcourt presence, whether it's at the 4 or the 5...the starting positions at 3, 4, and 5 are up for grabs IMO.
Re: Warriors trade 34 pick to PDX for 44 pick and cash If I were running the Warriors, I would set up a special summer mini camp with Curry and Biedrins, Randolph, and Wright, the sole purpose of which would be to have them run the pick and roll game to death until it's second nature to them. Curry's triple-threat combined with Biedrins soft hands and quickness should be a match made in heaven, and Randolph and Wright should benefit too. With Curry they should be able to work the PNR all day long effectively and stop settling for these crap outside jumpers all the time ("I can't think of anything else to do so I'm just going to jack it up").
I'm surprised we actually got a million bucks to move down. Seems like a million would be a lot to even sell the pick outright. Would rather be at 34 though. Early 2nd round is a nice place to pick from. Mid second blows.
Not that it's a big deal but the trade is actually with Portland, not Phoenix. (Phoenix is relatively cheap too, having sold off their late 1st round picks in the past few years.) While the trade leaves a bitter taste in my mouth, if I look at it from a purely business perspective, I agree with Run that the value of the pick is probably less than a million. And like Steinmetz said, the talent of the D-League is probably about the same as the pick that we could get. Still, there could have been a gem since the talent drops off around the 40-mark, and at 34, we could easily selected someone with first round talent that just happened to drop. There's always a chance someone could still drop to 44, or maybe we are taking a risk on a player that's considered unlikely to be drafted earlier, but still have to throw a few rotten tomatoes at Cohan for this one.
According to ESPN it was 2 million: http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/draft2010/news/story?id=5312274&campaign=rss&source=NBAHeadlines Hard to blame the team from a business standpoint but as a fan its a crappy move.
