Do you blame the Blazers for drafting Sam Bowie over Jordan, Stockton, and Barkley?I dont think it was a stupid idea at all to draft Bowie. Bowie had a similar college career to Jordans. The Blazers picked according to there needs. At the time they needed a center, Mychal Thompson was good but they knew he would have been a better fit at power foward. The one strong spot the Blazers did have on there roster was shooting guards.T hat may be why they passed up on Jordan. They had Jim Paxson and the rising star Clyde Drexler, Also they had star small foward Kiki Vandeweghe who could play shooting guard. Therefore they had no need for a shooting guard at all. I am somebody who agrees on drafting for need not talent. In the 80's it was obvious that you need a good center to win ball gamesBowie was a good center with a nice jump shot and rare passing ability for his size. Those type of big men were not around back then. If they would have drafted Jordan before anybody knew how there NBA careers would turn out, People would have raised eyebrows and wondered what the Blazers were thinking drafting another shooting guard.

People that call Bowie a bust and make fun of the Blazers should be shot...nobody knew Jordan would turn out the way he did.

True, nobody expected him to be what he was. Unfortunately so for the blazers

Well, 10.9 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 1.8 BPG over his career.I mean, you can't tell who's going to end up as a superstar.Kobe's first season was only like 9 PPG.Nellie said that Dirk would be Rookie of the Year, but struggled to even play that well, didn't even make the All-Rookie Team, then next season went out and was 2nd in MIP!!!

I may not be born during that time, but I don't blame Portland for drafting Sam Bowie. There was an episode on Top 5 reasons you can't blame for that same move.

They already have Clyde the Glide, who had a spectacular career for the Blazers. They drafted Sam Bowie, yes. But he didnt have too bad of a career either. They still turned out fine anyway. I dont see what the big deal is.

No. I highly doubt anybody thought he was going to be the G.O.A.T.

The only thing I dont understand is in todays era when a star swingman hits the game winning shot to win the NCAA championship like Jordan did he would be the #1 overall pick without a doubt.

At the time of that draft, people thought Jordan was going to be a good player. They thought Bowie was going to be a good palyer. I'd take a 7'0 "good" player over a 6'5 "good" player as well

Now, i think you cant blame them for passing on Jordan to get Bowie, BUT, Balla says they had the shooting guard and small foward spots filled and that they were looking for a big guy. They could of easily drafted Charles Barkley and had a fill at the power foward spot. I know Sir Charles isnt a center, but he is a big body. Now ppl probably didnt know Barkley was going to be that great either, but they had to know he was going to be pretty good since he did go number 5. Thats how i look at it.

Ya but at the time no one had ever suceeded in playing a Big Man spot at 6'5. At the time, that was a big question mark, and even today it would still be a big question

bowie might of been a superstar ppl forget how bad he messed up his knees he wouldnt have been as good as michela but he could of been a ten time allstar and with bowie, cliff, porter, drexler, dukworth im sure the blazers would have won a title.

That's just how the NBA draft works. No one knows how a player will turn out, sometimes you win, and sometimes you lose.

Yeah, sometimes you take a Darko Milicic when there's a Chris Bosh 2 picks away... or a Kwame Brown when there's a Pau Gasol... or Joe Smith when there's a KG(rofl)... or Michael Olowokandi/Raef LaFrentz when there's a Dirk Nowitzki...
