@RUBasketball: Richard Jefferson has just opted out of the final year of his contract .. would have guaranteed him $15.2 Mill

That's a shock. He's coming off of a year where he the worst PER of his career (13.1).

I think he just pissed away $15 million, because whatever contract he gets this summer is the same that he would have received next summer.

actually, if you think about it, a lot of teams freed up cap space right now...and a lot of teams *cough* knicks *cough* are going to get fucked over. So he can likely sign a multi-year deal more than he can get next year with a tighter market in a city where he can "live his lifestyle" *cough*.

gotta love that imaginary cap space. it really fucks teams over and guys get overpaid.

It's the new cool thing to do -- opt out.

$15 mil is a lot of money obviously but his situation in San Antonio is horrible. He might make less with a new team but be a bigger contributor.

There is no way in hell he will get better than lets say, a 10 mil x 3 years contract....

he's banking on an inflated market this year. Once the big names go to the bulls and the heat, everyone else will have shitloads of cap space and nothing to do with it.

Christmas comes early for the Spurs. Jesus.

Doesn't this put the Spurs way under the cap?

    This is Dirk's thinking . . . maybe it's RJ's thinking too:

The Mavericks fully expect to re-sign Nowitzki, who opted out of his contract this week.

“They’re going through all the hoops, but I’d be shocked if he went anywhere else,” a source close to the situation told Yahoo! Sports. “He’s going to get [a new contract] done before they change the rules and structure of the collective bargaining agreement.

    $10M x 3 > $15M x 1

Guys like Dirk and Pierce are opting out because the new CBA is going to reduce the max contracts and they want to cash in on another 5 or 6 year deal before the current CBA ends. Jefferson mentioned he'd opt out because he doesn't like it in San Antonio and wants to play for Phoenix or NY because the fast pace fits his skill set better. He's not going to get anything close to $15M though. LOL

I see RJeff in Phoenix. Especially if Amare bolts....they'll have to wheel and deal a bit maybe though to get some help at the 4.

The knicks, as mentioned above are another option. He'd probably do much better in a D'Antoni system....and the knicks have to spend their money on something I guess.

If he has another 13 PER season, he might not even get 3 x $5M.

    3 x $10M is guaranteed money.

presumably the impending lockout and radically restructured CBA coming in 2011 is a factor for these players that are opting out. summer 2011 is not going to be a good time to be a FA. whatever they are leaving on the table now they could potentially lose more by waiting.
