    She's either lying, or she's stark raving mad. I know plenty of people (and I'll bet you do, too) who would rather get a check from the government every month than go out and get a job. How politicians can say these things with a straight face is amazing.

    Shooter, she didn't say there weren't such people. She said that they weren't the only people on unemployment. Surely you agree with her on that? Or do you believe everyone drawing unemployment is shirking work?

    Why should anyone respond to her straw man?

    She said that families need unemployment to survive. That is simply not the case. SOME families might need additional income to survive, but they don't merely need unemployment and it's certainly not the case that EVERY family needs unemployment to survive.

    Some families right now have no way of getting income. Yes, some people cannot get jobs to pay their bills (did you hear? There's a recession!). How do they not need unemployment to survive?

    I don't think they were responding to her straw man at the end, where she claims that people opposed to extending benefits think that everyone on the dole is lazy/doesn't want to work. At 52 seconds.

    There are a lot of HER opinions (not her representation of the opinions of opponents) to disagree with. :)

    Ah. I think it is pretty clear from context that she is not saying every family needs unemployment to survive. If I say that basketball players will sign free agent contracts starting July 8, do I mean that all basketball players, worldwide, regardless of age and ability will sign free agent contracts?

    Which families on unemployment need it to survive? The ones with lots of money in the bank? The ones with another source of income?

    She's purposefully being vague to fear-monger her way to more governmental spending.

    I have a friend who hasn't worked for a year. He has a condo and doesn't need the money to survive.

    I quit my job and was out of work for more than six months and somehow survived without unemployment, let alone extended unemployment benefits.

    Is "surviving" maintaining cable and the internet to the house they have a mortgage on?

    I think that she's right in the sense that it CAN create jobs, but it creates jobs the way sugar feeds someone. It's systematically broken. The time to extend unemployment benefits is, IMO, when the country can afford it... not when we have politicians making sweeping generalizations about what families need to survive.

    It's a speech, not a legal contract. Unemployment isn't some strange new proposal, she doesn't need to go into great detail to explain it.

    I went on unemployment last May. My family wouldn't have perished if we didn't have that money but it helped us make ends meet. My wife was having complications with her pregnancy and the bills were really digging into our savings. We had health care through COBRA but it didn't cover a lot of the visits and my wife is not eligible for Medicaid because she is an permanent resident.

    Fuck it. Extend the benefits and while they are at it up the ante into the food stamp program as well. If we can spend zillions on military crap the least we can do is throw a few bones to people who got screwed when the economy went in the dumper.
