It actually was part of a campaign put together by the Chicago Tribune, not the Bulls. Someone on RealGM who was familiar with the marketing group that put together the campaign mentioned that the Bulls used the Tribune because they have an exclusive marketing agreement with another firm. That doesn't sound quite right to me -- I've never seen a company sign an exclusive agreement with a vendor, and big companies usually use many servicers. Assuming the Bulls spearheaded the push, or at least were amenable to it, I imagine they did it to skirt the $500 gift limit that teams are allowed to give Free Agents.
