I'm not sure how that conversation is supposed to go. I mean... "Hey, it's Carlos. I know I ditched you a couple years back, but how about you come play in Chicago with me?" Click!

Overall, I'm very relieved by this move. There's a 15% chance he goes Grant Hill on us, but barring that this signing makes a lot of sense for the reasons everyone has already mentioned.

However, if Lebron does not sign with us, I'm firmly in the camp that we still need to go for the jugular. Anthony Morrow and JJ Reddick are not going to get us past the Magic, Heat, Cavs (w/ Lebron) and Celtics. In a year or two when Rose and Noah are extended we're right back in LT territory with a 50 win team and we'll have to start shedding talent for nothing to stay afloat.

I'll look into this a little more when I get time, but there's got to be a few teams that either suck or are bleeding cash that would be willing to give us a really good player if we absorb contracts w/ our capspace. Do that and find some Mark Madsen types to fill up the rest of the roster.

    Iggy if we take Brand.

Teams paying the LT: Dallas, Denver, Lakers, and Orlando. Don't think any of them are hurting enough to feel the need to get under the LT threshold.

Maybe Denver, but I don't see them dealing Melo or Billups, leaving KMart and maybe Nene as guys they might trade.

Okay, so what's going on here in terms of the structuring? I'm not sure I understand why we would backload instead of frontload. Assuming the Bulls keep their roster the same, this is what we are looking at:

    EDITED

A completely flat deal paying 15,080,000 a year

    2010 - $37,959,980
    2011 - $41,702,680 (+ Joakim Noah)
    2012 - $42,487,640 (+ Derick Rose and Joakim Noah)
2013 - $36,547,850 (+ Derick Rose, Joakim Noah, Lou Deng and Taj Gibson)
    2014 - $19,240,000 (+ all the above)

    The rumored deal (backloaded)

    2010 - $35,879,980
    2011 - $40,662,680 (+ Noah)
    2012 - $42,487,640 (+ Derick Rose and Joakim Noah)
2013 - $37,587,850 (+ Derick Rose, Joakim Noah, Lou Deng and Taj Gibson)
    2014 - $17,160,000 (+ all the above)

    Reverse structure (frontloaded)

    2010 - $40,039,980
    2011 - $43,782,680 (+ Joakim Noah)
    2012 - $42,487,640 (+ Derick Rose and Joakim Noah)
2013 - $32,467,850 (+ Derick Rose, Joakim Noah, Lou Deng and Taj Gibson)
    2014 - $17,160,000 (+ all the above)

Isn't the third option, a frontloaded deal, the most sound? Especially given the rumors about the CBA being more owner-friendly. Anybody have any understanding for why they would want to structure the deal that way?

If they don't spend the money on LeBron who else would / should you guys pursue in the free agent market this year or do you wait for next summer?

I wanted to bump this because I think it relates to two of the other conversations taking place. If the Bulls elect not to restructure Boozer's deal it's a good indication that they are ready to push the luxury tax; and that a player like Iguodala is in play. There would be no reason to front load the contract otherwise -- it would be an unwise cap decision. We're going to know how serious Reinsdorf is about winning now by the final terms of the agreement.

Do you think we're in play for someone like Iggy? Who else do you think we can get?

I think the bulls are pot committed at this point. They only way they are going to make more money is by going deeper in the playoffs and selling more merchandise. They've been selling the stadium out for years. No sense in getting beaten by the Heat year after year.

Should they add salary and go for it, or cut salary and coast?

There's no way to cut salary. Rose will get a max extension. I think they sign Noah. They are always going to be as close to the LT as they can get. And I think if the right deal comes up, they make a move that puts them over. But it's not $11 mil/year for a one dimensional player.
