Do you think CEOs, who make even more than pro athletes, stop caring about or looking for more money? This doesn't hold true for every single person, obviously, but the vast majority of humans are always interested in more success and more wealth, if it's easily within their grasp.
it's not what he did, it's how he did it... shit ain't that complicated. treating others with a certain level of respect is not complicated if you're a good person. it probably is complicated if you're an asshole. do you think the same level of outrage and hate would exist if Lebron would have just signed a contract with miami and then held a small press conference?
I have not argued anyone who's claimed James is a tactless, egotistical jerk. From what I can tell, that's true. What I've been responding to is that James is a coward for joining up with two other superstars and that this shows he's clearly not ever going to be a candidate for greatest ever, etc. In other words, it's both the "what" and the "how" that are being criticized, and I find criticizing the "what" to be silly.
That's right, I don't think so. A bunch of "he's a coward" rhetoric isn't precisely compelling. I don't think there's anything cowardly about assuring winning, money and playing with friends and talented players. Sounds incredibly smart, actually. I'd question the sanity/intellect of someone who turned a perfect opportunity like that because a certain segment of fans/writers would get mad at him because they subscribe to a silly "Hey man, don't be a pussy...go to an untalented team and prove you can win on your own" concept.
and when he couldn't even call Gilbert himself, he had one of his boys call up Gilbert a few minutes before his special - you probably think that's not cowardly either.
He’s a coward because he took the concept of the “path of least resistance” to a whole new level. For that he's just permanently tarnished the legacy he so desperately trying to enhance by becoming a “champion ™.”
As I said, I'm only arguing about James' basketball decisions. Not his off-court character. I've already agreed that he acted obnoxiously. Very obnoxiously.
I don't really understand what you mean. What I am saying is that, yes, James may be a jerk, but I don't think it's cowardly to choose to play with two other superstars. Is he a coward in other aspects of his life? Maybe. Was it cowardly to select Miami as his new team and will it forever tarnish his basketball legacy? Not in my opinion.
If he wins a championship or four, no one outside of Ohio will give a shit about him leaving Cleveland. No one will care about the ESPN special. This is not Ty Cobb going into the stands to beat up a dude with no hands. This is business and, now that business is settled, it's up to him and the Heat to win. Ed O.
