Suddenly the Raptors are making a dizzying flurry of trades: So: that's Bosh, Hedo, Calderon OUT Diaw, Barbosa, Chandler IN Hmm. Calderon sure went for cheap in the end, didn't he?
2 summers ago this place was going nuts over Calderon......... and Adam Morrison before that! I'm starting to questions the credibility of your guys opinions!
So, essentially....Colangelo dumped all the salary being wasted on Turkoglu...and proceeded to waste all that salary on the equally bad Diaw and Chandler? Early contender for Executive of the Year, I'm thinking. To be fair, Chandler does at least play good defense. Which Turk hasn't in his later career.
Well, both Chandler and Diaw have more movable contracts than Hedo and Jose. Same with Barbosa. So at the very least, they get to rebuild quicker.
It's all salary, in my opinion. Turkoglu was being overpaid for 4 years and Jose for 3. Barbosa and Diaw are being overpaid for 2 and Chandler for 1. I think he deserves a lot of credit for being able to get rid of Turk without having to entice teams with draft picks/prospects. When it became clear just how bad that contract was towards the end of last season, I thought for sure we'd be stuck with him for 3 of those 4 years.
These are excellent moves by Colangelo. They are receiving far more reasonable contracts that are shorter in length and lower in dollars. The players are a talent upgrade as well. The outgoing guys were most definitely not helping the Raptors, now they get some new talent which may produce at a higher level than what they had. If these new guys don’t, the Raps can at least cut out of these deals fairly soon. Great move. If Turk can regain his form from a year ago it could make sense for Phoenix to try and pair him up with the last year or two of Nash. If Turk plays as he did last season this is a horrible trade for Phoenix.
Calderon is fine offensively, and a good scorer. He has had a lot of holes show up in his defensive game which weren't very apparent back then. I think he would make a great bench PG, that comes in and keeps your bench productive. But when it comes to getting stops in crunch time, you can't depend on him.
Not sure Colangelo deserves kudos for cleaning up his own mess. I'm also not sure if these moves make the team any better, short term, or long term. But, at least they dumped some salary. They'll be in the lottery for the foreseeable future. So, better to suck cheaply, I suppose. Last summer Colangelo also made a shit load of moves and was drawing raves for being so active. But, in the end, the result was one of the worst defesnive teams in NBA history, that missed the play-offs and then got the kiss-off from their superstar who was tired of losing. A lot of moves don't always equate to a lot of results. BNM
Sarver isn't a total tightwad. He's just "frugal" and hates paying luxury tax. Dumping Shaq last season saved him some big bucks, and after Amare left for the Knicks they could easily absorb Hedo's contract and still stay way below lux tax. I'm sure they think Hedo will thrive in their open court system, but Toronto also played fast and loose last year, and Hedo absolutely sucked. In the lomg run, Phoenix is older and worse now than the were at the end of last season. And, that's good for the Blazers. They also my be losing that bitch Amundson, which will weaken their bench. BNM
Yep, but the Suns are worse with a past his prime Hedo than an in his prime Amare. So, these moves are a net positive for the Blazers. BNM
Nope, didn't happen. If I read all the posts on this board correctly (regarding trades and free agent signings this off season), it's impossible to make one without a GM.
