Had Steven Tiley stuck to his diary, he would have been playing golf today watched by the proverbial two men and a dog in the Credit Suisse tournament at Sempachersee in Switzerland, a second division event on the European Tour.

Instead, thanks to heeding the advice of his manager Chubby Chandler, Tiley was set to defend his position as the leading English contender in front of packed galleries at The Open.

The 27-year-old from Kent, ranked a lowly 657th in the world, yesterday shot a bogey-free six-under-par 66 to steal the spotlight from leading English players Lee Westwood, Luke Donald, Ian Poulter, Paul Casey and Justin Rose, all of whom are in the world's top 16.
