Now that the Warriors have a new owner, could Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra be the next head coach? It certainly is possible. Mandalay Entertainment CEO Peter Guber and Menlo Park businessman Joe Lacob have reached an agreement in principle to purchase the Warriors from Chris Cohan for approximately $450 million. Now, take a look at the hierarchy of the Mandalay Group, and you’ll see an interesting name near the top: Jon Spoelstra, vice chairman of marketing for baseball properties. That would be Erik Spoelstra’s father. Read more: http://www.csnbayarea.com/07/15/10/...List-/landing.html?blockID=271952&feedID=2539
Interesting. Pat Riley is definintely gonna take that job over at some point because hes too much of an attention whore to stay out of it. I think I'd still rather have Shaw but Spoelstra seems appealing. Remember how Pat Riley made the Magic give them a 2nd round pick to sign him as their head coach though? God I fucking hate Pat Riley...
This seems like pure speculation. Spoelstra basically laughed at the idea. It just seems like a way to make some hypothesis based off a mere connection. The substance behind it is weak. However according to a friend of Brian Shaw, there may be interest from Brian Shaw to be the head coach here.
I like Oaktown's Brian Shaw, but he plays the triangle and I'm not sure if it will work here. It will take time to develop and we want to get back to the playoffs ASAP. Besides, they got the best in LA-LA land. If we go with an interim coach, then Keith Smart should get a chance. He is familiar with the team and has coached them before, will emphasize more 'D,' and be patient and develop young players He's been biding his time, so deserves a shot. I have a hard time believing the Warriors won't win trying to score 120 ppg.
If you can't get a top shelf head coach in for this year, then I would also rather give the interrim role to Smart. You'd save enough money to not take a big hit on buying out Nelson and would have a year to evaluate Smart as a HC. Also, it would begin the inevitable transition away from Nellieball, but probably somewhat gently as that's what Smart knows best right now. I do think Shaw is probably the best candidate out there right now though. It's important, but honestly I'm much more concerned with who the new GM and President will be right now. This team needs vision, focus, and a direction (plan) before they start moving pieces around. Since it's the head coach's job to execute on that vision, that decision shouldn't come first. The new GM should hire the coach, not the owners (with their blessing, obviously).
How about Tyrone Corbin? He's been under Sloan for 7 years. He was the type of player that makes a good coach too.
I think you have put it perfectly here. As much as I want change, I have to agree with you that taking a year to transition away from Nellieball, and to "groom" Keith Smart, sounds like the most sensible approach. I honestly like Smart and wouldn't mind him at all. I also have to agree with you that the owners should hire the GM and then let that person find the coach. I think fans might need to be patient while that whole process plays out. For example, it will be at least 2 months before the new ownership can make a move anyway. By that time, the season will almost be upon us. No need to rush it and make hasty management decisions. We're in it for the long haul, after-all. Until they can put forth a better vision, they should at least stick with what is, just for continuity and stability, until the right move is ready to be made. Bring in a sensible GM, maybe even keep Larry Riley on as an assistant (if he would be willing to take a step down). Work with Nellie and the players. Find out what's in place. Then layout a plan for a potential coaching change, based on the personnel in place and the style that suits these players. And finally, consider player moves based on the idea of a new coach and the vision of the team.
I'd love to get a Sloan disciple running this club. This team is built for the pick and roll, rebounding, and isn't comprised of good individual defenders. Somehow Utah is always a good defensive team despite having poor defensive players in the frontcourt. I'm really leaning more and more toward shit canning everyone and starting over so long as we see a candidate out there who is available now who we like for the long term. Brian Shaw, Tyrone Corbin, whoever. Never really been a Smart fan but I guess I don't have anything to knock him for either.
well, I wrote this in April 2009: When he put out Kurz/Randolph/Turiaf/Beans, that was just awesome. Just for the sight of it. It was funny as hell, with Morrow/Randolph sharing the point. He didn't keep them out there for very long, but it was fun watching it. And yes they did keep the lead. Right then, Smart showed he isn't afraid to do something different. I liked that. Nellie will probably play Lee at the C position. IMO at least you can count on Smart playing Lee/Beans together (again, from what I've seen). To me that's a plus.
