Vernon Davis was one of the top TEs in the league in 2009, and his quest for a new contract has been a story all offseason. The uncertain labor situation has prevented much progress on that path thus far. Still, according to Matt Maiocco of CSN Bay Area, Davis is the No. 1 Niner in line to get a contract extension as of now. An interesting fact reported by Maiocco is Davis' financial expectations. According to sources, the TE wants to become the highest-paid player at his position, with a yearly salary of $8 million, up from the $5.705 million he's set to make in 2010. But the Niners might want to wait until after this season to dole out such a massive deal, according to J.I. Halsell of the Football Outsiders:
The 49ers don't need this type of distraction heading into what should be a promising season and a return to the playoffs. He's hardly the 'best' TE in the league and has been one dimensional for the most part.
I agree Shape. I've been looking forward to see our boys earn a playoff berth and Davis seems to be more of a distraction than a asset to the team
Why ? He isn't the best TE ? So he shouldn't be. Jason Witten, Dallas Clark, and Antonio Gates are all better than him.
