Youzhny next faces No. 147-ranked Yuri Schukin from Kazakhstan, a qualifier who has reached his first quarterfinal match on tour at age 31. Schukin defeated Portugal's Frederico Gil 6-3, 6-3 on a rainy day on Gstaad's clay courts. Another Russian, Igor Andreev, completed a second-round victory over Switzerland's Marco Chiudinelli, 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (6).
