Nut jobs will always get guns. This incident has nothing to do with the Second Amendment. It's like saying we should limit the First Amendment because words can lead to violence.

    The short answer is No.

The only real defense for random and rare shootings such as these is for the would-be victims and bystanders to have the ability to subdue the perp.

And the only way that can be done is to mass arm the general public with capable distance weapons - most likely guns.

And what problems would be caused by that solution?

The best solution to me is to not be an asshole to people. The next important step is to try to remove stigma from mental health problems; encourage people to seek therapy.

You have hit on something that I have always seen as our of our country's biggest social problems- mental health. Hundreds of mental health facilities have been closed down and less and less public money is used to treat people and for awareness. To me, it's a problem that has been swept under the rug for the last 30 years on both a state and federal level.

Mental health services are better in the states than I've seen in a lot of countries but we still have a long way to go.

I think being nice to others gets you so far but in the Virginia Tech shootings the most of victims didn't even know the shooter

In some respects this has nothing to do with the 2nd amendment. Just yesterday in China a 4 people were killed and 16 stabbed by a guy with a knife. There are more guns per capita in Canada but they don't have as big a problem with mass shootings as Americans.

On the other hand how many people would have died if the attacker in China had a gun? These incidents happen rarely in countries with gun bans. I'm not saying ban guns, it's just food for thought

Even if your an asshole you shouldn't be killed for it. A nice ass kicking might be in line, but not murder.

It is a problem that was always swept under the rug. To my knowledge every culture looks down upon mental illness, unless you want to make a lot of possibly condescending assumptions about schizophrenia and religion.

true, my point was the mentality to do these things comes from someone being dissatisfied with their life to a point of thinking revenge will be their only satisfaction.

Well, if they couldn't get guns they would figure out a way to make a bomb, or decided to run over a bunch of people with a car. Crazy people will do anything.
