Assuming Alves is still on the same contract he was on at UFC 100 (when he last fought), he is set to lose $12,000 of his show money for missing weight. Fuck.

Well, except for the first four rounds. lol.

Silva is lucky as hell he survived that one. He wasn't just losing the ground--the standup wasn't that great for him either.

I think it was a huge mistake for Silva to start off so aggressively. In other fights he kind of hung back and felt the fight out before committing too much. This one he seemed really pissed off at the start after all the talk and he played into Sonnen's hands.

I dunno. Having Steven Segal in your corner is just begging to lose. That shit is something Apollo Creed would do in the original Rocky.

Silva claimed he had a rib injury. Anyone buying it?

He did look slower than usual, but still...hell of a fight from Chael.

Re: UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen (Aug. 7th) [update: Alves misses weight, is fined]

Aside from some typical Jon Fitch lay-and-pray that was a thrilling PPV.

dos Santos vs. Nelson was a barn-burner. Nelson is a tough SOB for sure. dos Santos ran out of ideas. He needs to be more creative and have better conditioning for his title fight. Nelson showed he has a lot of heart but is not at the highest level he could be.

Matt Hughes wins another fight with his stand-up. What. The. Fuck. Maybe he'll get to rematch Alves next?

Clay "The Electric Banket" Guida didn't have much for dos Anjos but accumulation of damage to RDA's injured jaw took it's toll. Sad to see a fight end that way.

Stefan Struve is a great prospect. He can take a beating and keep going for the win. Morecraft looked good in his debut but got sucked into winging punches with the lanky Dutchman. Not great strategy considering the success he was having in top control.

Maybe we'll see Struve and Nelson rematch next?

Jon Fitch did everything we expected him to do, everything he promised he wouldn't do, and Alves could do nothing about it. I would be very surprised if Dana gives him a title shot after that. Nobody but AKA wants to see it. Even AKA won't want it if Koscheck wins vs. GSP. Rogan kept giving Alves excuses but the kid made his bed. He just isn't good enough yet.

The main event was incredible. Chael Sonnen is an honest man. He did exactly as promised and was minutes away from a dominating win over Silva before his career long Achilles Heel--submission defence--did him in yet again. Maybe he was feeling confident that late in the fight or he just got tired. I thought we were in for a debacle as Sonnen seemed to claim he didn't tap but the replay showed what looked very much like a tap-out, and to his credit Sonnen didn't argue in the post-fight interview.

We learned a lot about Anderson Silva tonight, especially if the rib injury is a lame excuse and not a legit one. His take-down defence was suspect against Travis Lutter but it was totally exposed against Sonnen--though it takes a very high level wrestler to take advantage. Is there any doubt that GSP would wreck Silva now?

He looked slower but he also took a beating which also had an effect. We haven't seen him in a fight like this before so who knows, maybe his age is a factor now--maybe his conditioning isn't where it needs to be. Have to figure he will redouble his training efforts off the back of this dismal performance.

Dana is hearing people want a rematch with Sonnen and Silva but Belfort is waiting as well. Non-committal about what is next--pretty soon to make a decision.

Re: UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen (Aug. 7th) [update: Alves misses weight, is fined]

Yeah, GSP would wreck Silva if he didn't get caught coming in.

I dunno though. Silva looked slow as shit tonight...I don't buy the fact that he was completely healthy, but what fighter is? If we learned anything about Silva tonight, its that he's always dangerous no matter where the fight is. We knew his wrestling was suspicious, Chael did to him tonight what Hendo should've done but Hendo got excited and started exchanging. He took a grade-A ass whooping and then proceeded to land a sub against all odds to win.

I don't expect an immediate rematch. This isn't Penn/Edgar or Shogun/Machida I, this fight was stopped after a clear tap by Sonnen. I expect Sonnen to be 1 victory away from another title shot, though. As of now, I think if Belfort wins his next fight, he gets the next shot.

The 1st thing I thought of was age, he's 35 now...maybe its time for a full move to 205? He did take a beating, but he looked slow out of the gate. He didn't have that usual bounce in his step. I guess his next fight will tell us.

Like I said, I hope not. This wasn't a close decision or a BS decision, this fight was ended with a submission, Chael tapped. Give Belfort his shot and let Chael go earn another title fight, give him a fight against another top contender and if he wins, he can fight the winner of Silva/Belfort.

Yeah, I guess that might explain part of it. I really thought he'd dismantle Chael. But I dunno, there's something about the guy that makes me doubt it. Silva just seems kind of, well, flaky lately. The big stupid grin on his face before the fight, the light boxing pre-fight didn't seem intense, Steven Segal, the way he didn't hold his hands up in the first round as though he wasn't expecting this to be much of a contest, the way he ran away in the last two rounds of the prior fight. There just seemed something kind of half-assed about him....reminded me a little of watching Rasheed Wallace when things started going downhill in Portland. He's 35, which is kind of getting up there.

He's so talented and he hasn't lost in so long, I wonder if he just wasn't that hungry and didn't prepare properly before the fight.

Anyway, Chael looked great for nearly the entire fight. He made one mental slip, and that was it. I was disappointed to see him lose after all the great work he put in there.

Re: UFC 117: Silva vs. Sonnen (Aug. 7th) [update: Alves misses weight, is fined]

I also have no idea wtf is going through his head. He came out hot and then after getting rocked by Chael in the standup early in the first round he was standing there with his hands completely down just taking punches before Chael landed the first takedown of the fight. It seemed that Silva had plenty of time to recover and was just taking Chael's punches to fuck with him but it makes no sense after he came out aggressively. He didn't even try to defend a lot of the ground and pound throughout the fight either. Obviously part of his gameplan was to let Chael hit him if the blows were weak and Chael had no space to wind up and put power behind the punches but there were many times where Chael was railing him 5+ times in a row and he just sat there.

I guess you can't complain because he came away relatively unharmed considering the amount of punches he took. Props to Sonnen and props to Silva. Great fight but it leaves a lot of questions about Silva's health, what he was thinking, etc.

    Great fucking card.
