If you're magic johnson, you can play PG on offense and C on defense. If you're Pippen, you can play PG on offense and SF on defense. If you're Roy, maybe you can play PG on offense and SG on defense. But is he really a PG? Two seasons ago, he was 27th in assists per game, behind guys who played a lot less minutes per game. Heck, he was only .1 APG better than Steve Blake in 6+ more MPG. Last season, he wasn't even in the top 30 in APG. There are a few guys who aren't PGs who handle the ball most of the time and even lead their team in assists. I wouldn't argue that TMac of a few seasons ago (healthy) was their PG. Nor would I expect anyone to suggest LeBron was Cleveland's PG the past few seasons. At the defensive end, there's no way I see Roy as capable of guarding Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Rondo, Rose, Parker, or even old guys like Nash or Kidd - on a nightly basis.

Ok that's a fairly solid post against Roy's PG-ness. He certainly doesn't defend PG's...but neither did Sergio or Steve Blake.
The problem with comparisons like Magic is that Roy doesn't play the PG spot most of the time he only plays it certain times so naturally he's not going to get the assists like he would if he played it all the time. Probably the strongest argument that Roy is a PG is the type of PG many feels he plays best with, the ones that doesn't have the ball any more than bringing it up the court and sit back for 3 point shots.
Bryant shredded Matthews in the playoffs, and Anthony put up 30 ppg on him and CJ Miles. I'm willing to accept that Matthews is a solid defender, but using his playoffs performance against those two players, and especially Bryant, isn't enough proof for me.
The point was his size shouldn't be a big concern at playing the SF position because he can defend those guys. Melo and Bryant are All-NBA players, so it is expected they are going to score. Look what Broy did to Artest and Battier in the Houston series.
I don't think anyone has claimed he plays it 100% of the time. He doesn't usually bring the ball up or ever guard the super quick/smaller PGs unless there is a defensive switch. Typically he slides between positions 1-3 on who he guards... JMHO but he sort of floats providing weak D regardless of position (saving his fouls and energy) until crunch time when he's pretty good. But dude absolutely runs the point creating for himself and others at the end of shot clock situations and is the primary ball handler at the end of quarters and games. What exactly defines the PG position is a question that seems to have many viewpoints... we've had this debate here several times. Certainly Roy isn't a "pure PG" but he is a playmaker who shoulders a lot of the traditional PG responsibilities. Personally I want to have several playmakers/ballhandlers on the court at a time to facilitate offensive flow... pretty psyched about next years Blazers STOMP
Roy has played well in some games late, but in others he consistently drove the lane 1 on 3 or 1 on 4 and had the ball easily stripped away while leaving wide open team mates. That's becoming more the norm.
Ah, I see. Changing the argument from "Roy doesn't play PG" to "Roy doesn't play PG well". A nice tactic when shown how wrong you were.
