I got a jury summons for an aggravated murder trial that will last a minimum of twelve weeks. FML FML FML FML.
Jesus Christ. I only had to do Jury Duty once when I literally was 18. And even then never had anything to do. What happens for those 12 weeks work wise?
Why? I served on a murder trial and it was a gas. We finally found the guy guilty of second degree murder. The trial I didn't like was the guy in Vancouver luring troubled middle school girls to his house for drugs and sex. Hmmmmmmmm............. I guess that's what happened to Ms. boatsandstar.
Get some temporary facial tats. Stare at the defendant without blinking and mumble under your breath. If the judge or a lawyer speaks directly to you, jump and look terrified. When the lawyers ask you questions, repeat the question back carefully, stare thoughtfully into space for several seconds, then respond "are you trying to trick me?", or "could you rephrase the question?", or "that's a tough question - I'll have to pray on that." When the lawyers are questioning you, don't answer until you look over to the defendant for a few seconds, and then nod/grin/wink.
I forgot about that! I learned a lot from my time served and what a small world that we meet again here on S2!
I wish I could get that lucky. When I went to jury duty, they had no cases for me. 3 days and it was over...
Yep. For some reason, the Marion County computer system just loves me. I get called to jury duty every 3 years like clockwork. I waste a day sitting around, then they send me home, as no ADA is going to put a retired lawyer on the jury!
ideally you'd talk about how everyone is innocent to the prosecutor and everyone is guilty to the defendant.
Nah, I just would rather go there than to work! And my job would pay me for the time I miss, so it would be somewhat of a vacation.
I served on a jury in Vegas. It was a civil case. If I had been called a week later, there were two really huge cases I might have gotten. One was the OJ trial - the one that sent him to prison. The other was a guy in Reno who sniper shot a judge (was in the headlines in Vegas for months). As it was, there were all kinds of TV News trucks outside the court the 2nd week, covering OJ.
Damn, that blows. Twelve weeks is the real kicker. I was on the jury for a case where a dude improperly touched his 12 year old niece. It was supposed to go on for a 4-5 days, but it was over in 2. Lucky?! WTF. Getting paid meager wages and listening to some criminal and his victims cry all day is no picnic.
My state pays like 30 dollars a day, but my company pays me the difference between that and what I would have made if I worked. I thought all companies did that? One of my co-workers got grand jury duty for a full month. He got paid the same as usual, just worked half his usual hours and got to do something other than what he does every other day of his life.
When I went, they asked if jury duty would cause anybody hardship. A couple people said their work wasn't paying them to be there, so the judge let them leave the first day.
