How is that at all racist? Because I don't like Soccer? Civic Stadium was built for baseball. Its should be used as a baseball stadium, either Triple-A or Major League. Soccer even at the highest level will always be a second rate sport. BTW, raised in Portland, currently live in Vantucky.
It is racist because you said to move it by the mexicans. Assuming only mexicans like Soccer. Not hispanics, not white people, only mexicans. Because mexicans don't live in portland. Were these not implied assumptions? Regardless of MLS vs MLB, we aren't talkign about that. We are talking about MLS vs Triple A baseball. And you are STILL completely ignoring the ticket sales. The city said they didn't want to prop up a nonprofitable activity, the beavers. So how often do you go to Beavers games? How many people were at the last game you went to? How often do you check the scores of teh Beavers games?
Maybe I'm the only one here, but I'm happy not tearing it down until we know what to do with it. Personally building a baseball stadium there was shot down and you would have to know MLB is coming in and do it right if you were doing that. To build soccer is a waste in that location. To build some entertainment district is insane because you're also wasting the potential sports space. The reality is that like nearly a million people visit the site already because it is functional to have events like the Grand Floral parade, the X-game Dew Tour, the Monster Truck Rallies, the Winterhawks, the Disney on Ice, and the half dozen other events that can't quite fill the Rose Garden or want to come when the Rose Garden is already filled up with Blazers hogging it. So the MC gets used and gets used often. I like the thought that they will save taxpayer dollars to just upgrade the items that would turn it from a POS to a comfortable 2nd choice venue to the Rose Garden (like new bathrooms, new seating structure and maybe a new concourse with new vendors, etc.). It could suddenly seem pretty nice in there with a quarter of the cost of tearing it down. Then when MLB is looking to come to town with some new, rich owner in 2020, we'll have a site right there on lightrail with no AAA team clogging the way. So as much as I'd like a shiny new building of something in that old hole, I think this is the best move for MLB or NHL hopefuls and the best move for the taxpayers. We just need to suck it up and look at the greater good for our children and the city as a whole after we're dead and gone.
That a real stretch. All I said was that I always see Mexican's playing soccer on the field at Delta Park when I drive by. Now I'm painted as a racist? riiiiiiight.
I'll drop the whole thing, if you'll admit that The Beavers are not as successful as the Timbers. And it makes sense to use the venue for the Timbers.
Soccer sucks though and the Timbers Army is obnoxious. They act like the Timbers are some European powerhouse soccer team and since they are an allegiance of fans they can act like assholes. But ya, they get more fans then the Beavs.
OMG... I understand why you hate them now... "allegiance of fans they can act like assholes." THEY ARE LAKER FANS IN DISGUISE!
A competition swimming pool? Really? GTFO Sam Adams. I remember a story about Adams involving a alcohol induced wreck on Jatzen Beach. Now he's some kind of anti-alcohol advocate. I used to be big Adams supporter. Now I'm starting to think he's a real douche.
I just think that area... being so boxed in by freeways and roads... is never going to be some place where people just go to hang out. For sporting events it can work... but community center? It will be a waste. Businesses couldn't survive there because no one goes there if there is not a sporting event... in part because you couldn't even see they were there... there was no parking... (or people didn't know they could park in the garage for free). I just think whatever they come up with other than a sporting stadium would be bound to fail. Would have been damn nice to have a new soccer stadium there... it just made so much sense.
When do the Beavers attendance reach 7500+ per game? Hah, I think not. The Timbers pull that every game and we just had 15,418 on Wednesday.
For those who say Portland is a minor league sports town, I'll respectfully disagree. The reason why the Blazers are a success and the Beavers have been on life support is that Portlanders are now demanding major league entertainment. Our Nielson numbers for Mariner and Seahawk games are far above the national norm. We also are willing to make the trip up to Seattle to support those teams in outsized numbers. If you put an NFL or MLB team in Portland, every single game would be sold out. Our issue isn't fan support, it's that we no longer have the corporate base to finance the advertising and luxury box sections that contribute the lion's hare of the bottom line of modern pro sports these days.
