due to the shit economy? In a good economy you can move around with little repercussions..but now that everything sucks, things are variable...jobs may be fluid, if you go to a company and it doesn't work out you can be screwed because of the high number of qualified candidates....it makes it less desirable to make lateral moves or even to go for a better job.

At least if I get canned/laid off instead of quitting, I can get unemployment and a severance. That's the golden egg right there I guess?

BTW, what's a standard severence? The basic rule I've heard is 2 weeks of your current salary per year at the company?

Usually, one gets severance pay if they are laid off- not fired or quitting. My experience is that it's either one or two weeks per year of service with a cap on it.

I've been there before, right when I started my career. It's why I worked to move into a position where I could control my own happiness. There are few things worse than a bad work situation.

I worked a job for 8 years after HS that I dreaded waking up every fucking morning! Very depressing time of my life.

Not currently but been there done that have the scars. Before current job spent 5 years at places (more than one) that definitely crossed the line into abusive. I went to work every day KNOWING I would be screamed at, threatened, called ugly names, assigned ridiculous punishments (not for doing anything wrong but because a totally unqualified supervisor hated that I knew more than he and assigned punishments to put me in my place), lied to, lied about, etc. I got depressed every Sunday afternoon thinking of the week ahead.

Economy sucks but still you should look around even if you can't quit your hellhole in the meantime.
