At his age and this stage and with Miller already on board, this move isn't enough of an upgrade to try to trade in Conference.

And I was very interested in trying to trade for Billups after Dumars made his "I am putting the entire team on the market" statement. Most other Blazer fans were all hot for Prince. I wanted Billups pretty badly. Thought he was near perfect for our team at the time. Too bad we didn't have a big-name player on an ending contract to trade for him.

I haven't read the rest of the thread yet, and I assume it has been mentioned already, but:

    1) Melo is raising a stink to get out of Denver. Denver has a good roster, and owner who will spend up to the lux tax limit and has even gone over.

    2) How is Portland's setup significantly better than Denver from Melo's perspective? Smaller city. More remote. Good young roster, but one with an establised star on the perimeter. Slow paced coach.

    3) Melo is from New York

    4) Melo, I think, doesn't want OUT of Denver, as much as he want to go TO New York. He wants to go home, to the biggest market, to the media center, to the lifestyle, to play for D'Antoni in a fast paced system.

Besides all that, I don't really want Melo anywho. We lose our glue player, Batum, in the starting lineup, which would require in addition, replacing Miller with a glue player at the point guard position, no easy task, and Melo and Brandon overlap enough that they don't maximize each other.

Mello in NYC works for me.... Way I see it Ptown can lay up up get healthy for the playoffs and let the Heat and Knicks kill each other in the east every year for the next 5 years.... The west is shaping up to be us and the Thunder for a bunch of years to come... The Lake Show can take care of business this year and hand it over to us.

Side bet.... do ya think Phil ends up in NYC next year to coach that new dream team? hmmmmmm!

Probably. That kind of goes along with the soap opera the league has become.

    CP3/Melo/Amare/Phil v Wade/Lebron/Bosh/Riley--who gets the edge?

Melo's from Baltimore, not New York. Thought I'd clear that up, just because I like correcting people :)

Realgm has about 3 new articles posted on their 'wire' just in the last hour about Carmelo forcing his way out of Denver. Does this potentially have more to it than just fodder?

Thanks. Baltimore is not NY. Close in miles, but not the same place.

That's a tough one. I think probably Wade/LeBron/Bosh, only because they will have a better supporting cast.

    CP3 = Wade
    LeBron > Melo
    Bosh > Amare

How could NY get both Melo and Chris Paul?

Two big differences between Andre Miller (an excellent, underrated PG) and Chauncey Billups:

    1. Billups is a great and clutch three point shooter. Miller neither takes nor makes threes. This makes Miller less than ideal to play alongside Roy.
    2. Billups is one of the best lockerroom guys in the entire league. He COMPLETELY transformed the Nuggets from a bunch of chuckleheads to a team that stormed to the West finals. He has some kind of voodoo that makes young guys look up to him and seek out his advice. Even JR Smith was listening to him.
Miller, on the other hand, is almost pathologically a loner. He's a leader on the court, and by example, but of no help off the court. As the Nuggets testified (and, by subtraction, the Pistons) the lockerroom part is incredibly important. All the more given that we have young players like LMA and Oden who are, let's say, sensitive.

THAT is why I would give up Bayless and Miller AND Joel (even if healthy) to get Billups. He's Derek-Fisher-good at the leadership/intangibles (yes Ed, I said it) stuff.

(Incidentally, both Billups and Miller are top flight post-up PGs.)

I didn't say they could. Platypus merely asked which big three would have the edge.

Stern enabling these guys to have this much leverage about where they want to go, and essentially holding teams hostage reeks of corruption. Denver has no choice but to take pennies on the dollar now in a trade, or risk losing Melo for nothing. It's clear that small-market teams are at even more of a disadvantage than previously perceived.

Although I'd be somewhat glad if the west gets weaker, I don't want more "Superteams." Such a large disparity between the best and worst teams is not good for the league.

Melo (supposedly) is listing his preferred teams of NY and Orlando.

Orlando is a small market team.

Also, Houston is mentioned as a dark horse that Melo would consider. Is there really that much difference between Denver and Houston?

If these reports are true, it must be that Melo has soured on his relationships in Denver.

If Melo goes to Orlando - what do they give up to get him - and after that, are they better than Miami? Howard and Melo is a good duo, but it isn't Shaq & Kobe good.

If Melo goes to NY how is that a superteam? Amare and Melo and ???

I think you are overstating the impact here. At least so far.

If NY gets Melo AND Chris Paul. That is a superteam.

Then if Durant forced his way onto, say, Chicago or New Jersey, your fears would have been realized. Until then, I am not so sure about all this.
