ALLEN PARK -- Detroit Lions general manager Martin Mayhew continued to massage the roster Wednesday, trading for former 2008 first-round draft pick Lawrence Jackson, a defensive end, and releasing fullback Matt Clapp and safety Marvin White.

White was acquired during last season and started six games for the Lions. Clapp had been sidelined with an injury.

Jackson didn't appear to fit the Seahawks' new defense, and he now joins former Seahawks' Nate Burleson, Julian Peterson, Maurice Morris, Will Heller and Rob Sims in Detroit.

The Lions, who reportedly gave up an undisclosed draft pick for Jackson, won't confirm the trade until Jackson has passed a physical. Jackson had missed some practice time in Seattle recently with a hamstring injury.

"Detroit showed strong interest in Lawrence and this provides him an opportunity to move forward while he is still early in his career,'' Seattle general manager John Schneider told "The Olympian.''

Jackson was the 28th pick in the 2008 draft and started 24 games for the Seahawks. He had a total of 6 1/2 sacks in two years.

The Lions don't have much depth on the left side. After starter Cliff Avril, the Lions have a veteran (Jared DeVries) who has missed almost all of camp with a sore left leg, and a rookie (Willie Young) who is unproven and inconsistent.
