http://www.cagepotato.com/carwin-named-federal-steroids-case-newspaper-report-says The name of former UFC interim heavyweight champion Shane Carwin appeared on a list of 22 professional athletes federal prosecutors allege obtained steroids from a Mobile, Ala.-based pharmacy between 2004-06, according to an internet report published on Friday by the Mobile Press-Register newspaper. Carwin was among seven athletes – including pro wrestlers Kurt Angle and “Hardcore” Bob Holly as well as four professional bodybuilders – named by Assistant U.S. Attorney Donna Dobbins at the sentencing of Alabama pharmacist J. Michael Bennett. Bennett, one of five men recently found guilty of "participating in a nationwide conspiracy to illegally sell anabolic steroids," was sentenced to four years in prison, according to the report. Court records also referenced a half-dozen other bodybuilders, seven pro wrestlers and two professional baseball players by only their initials, according to the Press-Register. Prosecutors referred to Bennett, a supervising pharmacist, and his co-defendants -- the owners of Mobile’s Applied Pharmacy Services and another anti-aging clinic owner -- as "drug dealers in lab coats" and court records said the men “shipped 762,388 dosages (of steroids) to 17 doctors and clinics from April 4, 2004, until Aug. 30, 2006.” The four other men will be sentenced at a later date and U.S. District Judge Ginny Granade implied they could receive stiffer penalties than Bennett, the report said. It is unknown if legal action will be pursued against any of the athletes named in the case. From the Press-Register story: “They contended that Bennett played a key role in an enterprise involving rogue doctors and health clinics across the country who used the compounding pharmacy to supply healthy adults with dangerous steroids. Some of those substances were veterinary drugs approved only for use in livestock. ‘These are steroids for horses and cows, not for young people and humans,’ Assistant U.S. Attorney Dobbins said.” (UPDATE: MMA Fighting.com reports Carwin's agent, Jason Genet, said his client "had no comment, but plans to make a statement at a later date.")
Re: Shane Carwin named in federal steroids case The seriousness of this goes up tenfold because it is a federal case.
Re: Shane Carwin named in federal steroids case Carwin & his legal dept. haven't released a statement yet but from his Tweets it sounds like he is going to fight/deny everything. If the guy couldn't admit he gassed out vs. Lesnar, do you really expect him to confess to using PEDs? If you aren't using, you're name never comes up on a list like this. Especially not in a federal investigation. That being said, he hasn't failed a test so we should give him at least some benefit of the doubt.
Re: Shane Carwin named in federal steroids case Yeah, he and Roy Nelson kind of traded some barbs on twitter...actually, Roy didn't do anything really, Carwin just got a bit offended and told Roy he should hit a treadmill. Oh the irony, because Roy's cardio > Shane's.
Re: Shane Carwin named in federal steroids case if Carwin is cleared i'd say dana schedule a matchup between the two, only makes sense.
Re: Shane Carwin named in federal steroids case Roy does want Big Nog, I'd like to see him get Frank Mir. I think Roy wants to have a BJJ battle!
Re: Shane Carwin named in federal steroids case WKR breaks down the allegations (evidence) and it doesn't look good for Carwin: http://www.watchkalibrun.com/2010/8/19/1630168/the-steroid-conspiracy-and-shane
I don't see the big deal here, though. He hasn't failed a drug test in the UFC? So he used roids...okay...good for him...but he's obviously off them now, right? Does anybody know if the UFC does random drug testings in between fights, for fighters?
For the life of me I can't remember who wrote this article, but I know I read this article. Not sure how legit it was, but the website was legit (doesn't really mean the author is legit though I suppose). This article I read stated that once upon a time a major commission head contacted a major UFC head and encouraged the UFC to test their fighters for steroids a month before their fight. If they were to fail that drug test, the fighter would back out of their fight with an injury. Not a made up injury, a real injury that they had but had planned on just fighting through. They would get a doctor to legitimately tell him he shouldn't fight with that injury and so he would back out. This would be to protect the fighter from getting busted with roids in his system. Like I said, I forgot where I read that article, but I did read it somewhere. Could be true, might not be true, who knows. But as far as that I don't think the UFC randomly tests their fighters, but I could be wrong.
You don't have to fail a drug test by the WEC or UFC if you are caught buying quantities of steroids from shady doctors, which it seems Carwin has been.
