Spain, the prohibitive favorite in Group D and reigning world champions, were upset on the first day of play at the 2010 FIBA World Championships on Saturday. Behind aggressive defense and spectacular bench play, France stunned Spain 72-66 in Izmir. France outscored Spain 29-22 in a fourth quarter that included a 19-13 run to end the game. France took their second lead of the contest -- only their first since the end of the second quarter -- with under five minutes left in the game. From there, everything seemed to unravel for Spain, which won the silver medal in Beijing. Nicolas Batum opened the floodgates for France by draining a three pointer late in the fourth quarter, giving the underdogs a 58-53 advantage. After Spain failed to score a field goal on their next possession, Rudy Fernandez of Spain committed a foul, then a technical foul and France soon opened an 11-point lead with less than 90 seconds left in the game.
