In possibly one of the biggest upset victories this year, Ricky Burns (29-2-0 7KO’s) has become the new WBO super-featherweight champion of the world as he secured a unanimous decision against knockout artist Roman ‘Rocky’ Martinez (24-1-1 15KO’s). Burns was a 3/1 underdog before the fight, and was dropped in the first round from a solid right hand shot by the former champion. Up until the knockdown in the first round, Burns was winning it, but as was the case throughout the fight, Martinez landed the one heavy looking shots and was able to open with a 10-8 round. But from that round onwards, Ricky Burns boxed exceptionally and was able to keep Martinez off him with stiff jabs and uppercuts. Burns exposed the Puerto rican and made him look very ordinary. The boxing ability was evident as the Scot was able to use his 3 inch reach advantage, however Burns was not afraid to mix it when Martinez got close. Surprisingly there were even periods in the fight where the man with only 7 knockouts on his record was able to hurt Martinez and almost knocked him down on multiple occasions. As Jim Watt said before the fight “Ricky Burns will have to produce the performance of his life”. And that’s exactly what he did. http://www.boxingnews24.com/2010/09/shock-victory-for-ricky-burns-as-he-blows-roman-martinez-away/
