In the same fashion as the fictional Mary Richards of the 1970s Mary Tyler Moore Show, Hannah Storm apparently had spunk on her side when she landed her first big-time job in 1985, hosting Rockets pregame and postgame shows on KTXH (Channel 20) at age 23.

It was, one critic wrote, a "peculiar" notion that Storm, whose only apparent credentials were two years' experience as a sports anchor at a Houston rock radio station, would get a shot at such a plum assignment.

"Only time will tell if Storm … will work out," he wrote. "She is long on gumption, but short on experience."

Twenty-five years later, with stints at CNN, NBC, CBS and now ESPN and ABC on her résumé, time has returned its verdict in that regard.

"I guess gumption is good for something," she said, laughing during a break in the ESPN cafeteria after her morning SportsCenter duties.
