With training camp approaching, the New Jersey Nets went for a veteran presence on a team filled with youth.

The Nets added Joe Smith, the 6-foot-10 power forward with the distinction of being the first overall pick in the 1995 Draft.

While never living up to his pre-draft hype, Smith has emerged as a serviceable role player in his 15 NBA seasons. Smith spent last season with the Atlanta Hawks and averaged three ppg and 2.5 rpg in nine minutes of action.

Smith has played on 10 different teams in his career, New Jersey now being his 11th.

The 35-year old forward, the oldest on the roster, will likely play a larger role than veterans of Nets' past. Don't expect Smith to look like Bobby Simmons on the end of the New Jersey bench.
