Anyone think Josh Grispi should be getting this title shot instead of Manny Gamburyan?

Really looking forward to this card, the little guys hardly ever disappoint and Aldo is just fun to watch.

Wasn't Grispi just coming off a major injury before his last fight, another fight against better competition than L.C. Davis and I think he could be up for a shot at Aldo?

Re: WEC 51: Aldo vs. Gamburyan (Sept. 30th)

Aldo's leg kicks are so mean, like 3 leg kicks and the announcers are talking about Manny's leg buckling/turning red in the 1st round (plus how he crippled Faber). I really believe he'd destroy any 155er on the feet, even Edgar's in and out bouncing around style wouldn't work after his lead leg was damn near taken off.

I don't think there's a whole lot of competition for Aldo at 145, and the only thing that could stop him from a title and more domination at 155 are just big wrestlers that could lay'n pray a smaller guy like him. Haven't really seen any of him on his back, but if he has an active guard I'd love to see him move up and transfer to the UFC.

The WEC is solid. Pretty much every time you're guaranteed to see good action. Great card.

Still don't know how a judge scored that fight for Garcia. He got picked apart.

    Some thoughts on the show...

Hominick/Garcia was a clinic. Hominick is a good technical striker but I wonder if he has the power in his hands to compete with Aldo. He doesn't kick much. Garcia is getting to the point where a change in style, however unpopular that would be, is necessary. Winging punches is not working that well. Should've lost to Jung.

Roop vs. Jung was cool. Roop used good footwork and his length to keep Jung from landing anything significant. Jung looked very small in comparison, especially when Roop front and high kicked. Jung's strategy of not defending himself didn't work out so well. With a bit of technique refinement with a great boxing or kickboxing trainer (Shawn Tompkins, Ernesto Hoost, Kru Phil Nurse, etc.) he would fare better. Probably could've gone to his grappling more as well but Roop was just so big and hard to control.

Torres vs. Valencia was good, too. At first it looked like Torres was timid but really he was just biding his time. Each time he landed a significant shot he jumped all over Valencia and tried to end the fight. Can't help but feel this fight didn't prove much in Torres' comeback drive, but still good for him to get a W. Kind of humbling to think the former longtime champ spent two months in a Montreal basement prior to this fight. Dude have you never heard of a short term apartment rental?

Zhang vs. Garza was fascinating having never seen Zhang (or any Chinese-born fighter?) fight in MMA before. He seemed to like grappling which is good because supposedly his kickboxing is alright. He was a bit small I think. For a lack of grappling training his guillotine technique was good--getting high up the back of his opponent leaning into the choke rather than away from it, that's how you finish that type of guillotine. [/Joe Rogan]

Cerrone vs. Varner was awesome. Like most MMA fans I really dislike the time-out calling, away-running, eye-nursing, excuse-making Worm Jamie Varner, so to see him get blasted by Cerrone (and outwrestled!) was fun. To be honest I think Varner is the superior fighter of the two but he was in a bad place last night. He didn't have the spark that he showed in the first fight between them--or perhaps Cerrone has evolved that much. Funny they kept going to tap gloves and then would immediately regret it and try to fight/fuck around with each other more. Wouldn't mind seeing a third fight. I think the fact that this fight was three rounds made it better for Cerrone.

Finally, Aldo is a killer. I've read a few people complaining that some of the ground and pound shots he landed on Gamburyan were to the neck/back of the head, but I don't think the outcome would've been different either way. Glad to see Aldo not resorting to kicking and circling like he did against Faber. I would love to see this kid move up to 155, clear out the WEC in a year or two, then move to the UFC. As for Gamburyan, I was never sold on him anyway.

Overall this was far and away one of the best MMA shows of the year. Big props to the WEC as always.
