"The Chargers are down to four fully healthy outside linebackers. They added their fourth long snapper in two weeks. And the tremors of a special teams shakeup began to be felt. Outside linebacker Larry English underwent surgery Tuesday for a foot ailment that has been bothering him since early in training camp. He is expected to be out four to six weeks. English started the Chargers' first two games this season in place of Shawne Merriman, who has a sore Achilles'. Merriman started Sunday in Seattle but left after three plays with a calf injury. Either Merriman or Antwan Applewhite will start Sunday's game against Arizona opposite Shaun Phillips , with Jyles Tucker and rookie Brandon Lang as backups. The team did put linebacker James Holt, who played inside and outside, on IR with a shoulder injury suffered Sunday at Seattle and also placed long snapper Ryan Neill on IR after it was discovered he broke his leg Sunday. Long snapper Ethan Albright was signed to replace Neill. And with the knowledge that they have given away two victories in the season's first three games due almost solely to ineptness on kick coverage, the Chargers brought back safety Quinton Teal, a career special teams contributor who they signed in August and cut early this month. Teal will almost certainly be active exclusively for the purpose of playing on special teams. The Chargers are also known to be shopping for more special teams help, which could come via trade or a free agent pickup. This after some current special teams players were put on notice Monday that they are now playing to keep their jobs." http://www.signonsandiego.com/news/2010/sep/28/english-has-surgery/
