The Bulls signed C.J. Watson to be Derrick Rose's backup point guard, but they would like the guards to share the backcourt together for at least a few minutes each game. ''We'll get the ball up the court pretty fast,'' Watson said Friday. ''If me or [Rose] gets the rebound, we can get up in transition pretty well, get to the basket and find other people. It's going to be interesting to see how we play together. I don't think it'll be frustration or anything like that.'' Playing with Watson will allow Rose to do more running off screens without the ball. ''He definitely can score,'' Rose said, referring to how impressed he is with Watson. ''He's a real grinder [on defense]. He likes getting in passing lanes, won't back down from anything and plays with a lot of confidence. When he's out there, he really runs the offense. When I'm out, I know he can run the team.'' http://www.suntimes.com/sports/basketball/bulls/2765208,CST-SPT-bull02.article
Okay, has anyone ever seen Rose work off screens without the ball in his hands and then catch and shoot a jumper? I know I never have.
Yeah, no he's not going to do that. But, I'm just guessing, maybe it allows him to receive the ball and attack without having two guys immediately in front of him? I don't know. That stuff about only shooting jumpers does seem worrisome...He needs the jumper, but his best weapon is attacking the rim. I could see how this could free him up a bit to attack, and yet not slow the team down by having the ball in an Adrian Griffin's hands, for example.
hey...let's nott forget that Derrick started the season last year with the notion hanging over his head that he can't shoot. As the season unfolded it became clear that his mid range J was surprisingly good. I mean very good If he can extend his range out to another 5 to 6 ft and become a reliable 3 point threat he becomes a legitimate top 3 point guard, that, at the moment we think he is. Don't discourage the boy from developing his J. He's going to need it to stop getting mugged and to keep the defenses honest.
What I (and others) don't seem to understand was how this was his main priority. He still turned the ball over more than we'd like, he wasn't a very good rebounder (worse than his rookie year), his defense was average and he iso'd too much. Something PGs shouldn't be doing. And extending his jump shot makes him a legit point guard? That doesn't seem to make sense to me. I can understand why someone like Rondo would need a jump shot seeing as how he's already a great defender, rebounder and passer, but Rose hasn't excelled in any of those facets of his game, imo. Like the 3 (maybe 4) point guards ahead of him: Paul, D Will, Rondo (and hell, maybe even Stephen Curry with the way that kid is making HUGE strides in his overall game), they all possess 3 of those 4 point guard qualities, and for him to improve on ways to score, it shows he's leading down the path of another undersized SG than a big, ridiculously athletic PG.
Sex Panther 1. The inference from the reader is led by the angle of the reporter that this was a main priority . 2. Defense , rebounding ( staying out of foul trouble and court position ) and iso's ( which you all point out ) were all a function of our one man offense driven by a novice Coach who was desperate to hang on and road the stud's ass like Zorro. I mean Deng was a #2 who was misused and Johnny Jabstep usurped this position in a contract year and shot us into the abyss until Christmas when DRose started to come good from his early season injury ( hip flexor I think from memory ) 3. Yes , extending his range to be a credible 3 point threat gives him the opportunity to cement his credentials in the same space as Chris Paul and Deron Willaims . Let's be real. Derrick Rose has had no one capable of carrying the load You add Boozer to Rose , one of the best 3 point shooters in the game in Korver, and an improved finisher and scorer in Brewer and Watson over say Warrick, Alexander , Murray etc and he will drive his assist numbers to the 8 +mark A genuine Coach with this addition of on floor talent of specialists will lend further weight to that And the ability for Derrick Rose to execute better as a point guard does relate , in significant part . to his ability to hit from long range . Being a point guard isn't just about assisting for others solely . Its about making the correct play that enables you to win And if the right play is taking and making the 3 - and letting defenses know you have this in your arsenal when they know how hard you are in transition or taking it inside , or when you are being doubled in a 3 - 2 zone or a 2 - 3 zone ...then you read the defense and make the passing play inside or on the weak side for the shot To be a complete point guard , a top 3 point guard , you need assets on the floor with you who can get it done , but you also need a complete and full repetiore of your own - and this does include a mid range and a longer range J to create options you can use in the offense as you read the defenses better. Besides Ben Gordon , Derrick hasn't played with a dominant scorer or a specialist in his 2 season to date , nor has his game been as well rounded in its development. If he now has better on floor assets and his game is rounding out to be more complete then it really should be "game on" as he takes his step to cementing his place alongside ( or maybe marginally below ) Chris Paul and Deron Williams as he nears his full maturity. We shouldn't get too freaked about our boy with a J in his bag that he's not afraid to use . Fact will be if he's a 24 and 8 point guard and we're a Conference contender with the team we've got and Booze, Noah and Deng are firing on all cyclinders as are our support specilaists like Korver, Brewer, Watson and Gibson - then I don't see how many people will be able to argue that he doesn't deserve to be talked about in the same breath as Paul and Williams
And Rondo isn't ranked ahead of Rose Or at least he shouldn't be by any rational person Put Rondo on this team the last 2 seasons and let's see how he goes. You must adjust for the fact that he's had Pierce, Allen and KG and a bunch of veteran role players and a genuine Coaching Staff. Also...we're all getting twisted because we're worried that Derrick is going to shoot the shit out of the ball - driven by an angle that a reporter was pressing on one of many new quotes from Derrick " No Ventriloquist" Rose Yet a month ago everyone was marvelling about his progression on the defensive end which is why , in part , he and Westbrook beat out Rondo . Not that he was necessarily a better defender than Rondo , but , he was good enough in the progression that had been made to play in the system that team wanted to play , and where , his offense was more than Rondo's ( in what was required ) - but probably most signficantly - he and Westbrook likely proved that they could asssimilate better in their low keyed selflessness than what Rondo could . This is key. Rondo is a prickly tempremental little fuck. He has had issues on his own team . A team of tough assed veterans like the Celtics. Whilst he is an undeniable talent , notwithstanding the holes in his game , you don't necessarily want your point guard being a meltdown , or a pushed personal agenda away with a teammate(s) or the organisation generally ....to possibly put you in a ditch that you can't get out of. And Rondo is that type of risk just because of who he is. Derrick Rose is the anthesis of this which is exactly the reason why he'll make it to another level that Rajon Rondo never will. And it also helps that he has physical capacity in his game to be a more complete player/point guard Physical tools but mental tool too. Game over
1. I know that; but really, just by reading and listening to his interviews, Rose himself has made it seem as though it was his main priority. A little misleading? Perhaps, but rather the notion that he's gone out of his way to tell us this were a main priority when so much more need be tweaked was what had bothered me. 2. Fair enough, we'll have to wait and see. Let's hope he hits the glass better this year. 3. I can concede to points 1 and 2 (as well as the following post; though, the latter is all a guess considering his numbers got even better when the big 3 were injured and he had to step it up), but this I still don't understand. I never said he couldn't pass, but rather he didn't pass when need be. I understand last year's team had an overall talent level near decrepitude, and I even understand we had a poor man's poor man's Mike Brown, but Rose often overplayed the ball and killed the clock, which neither got the assist or the correct play to win. I'm not sure whether or not I stand with the minority, but I'm a firm believer that if one were to be a great distributor, he'd have already made the best choice/decision for the team. I'm not asking Rose to drop up 13 dimes a game, but his standby security blanket of "pass? no? ok i'll drive it in" leads me to believe he'll do the same thing with the jump shot. Less of what he was good at. Even then, he wasn't that great of a finisher --crazy quickness and breathtaking first step, but not a great finisher-- so maybe he should of rounded out his whole game, rather than focusing on the 3. His rebounding was sub-par at best last year, and he strayed from THE development--from the first year--oF his passing, I'm HOPING the defense is really improved, at the very least. FWIW, if you were a truly special PG, you would make everyone around you better no matter who your running mates are. Take a look at Chris Paul, and even Jason Kidd the decade prior. Paul has never been surrounded by a talent pool similar to that of the Lakers, Heat, Magic, etc. But he was able to push his teammate's game to a level not all too familiar to them and lead them to the doorstep of the WCF. Rose is nowhere near that level of greatness, and in my opinion, he's two-tiers behind. p.s. apologies on the short response from a post which warrants something much longer. But goddamn, how you did that at 2AM is beyond me.
I'm in Australia , Panther , and its 5.20pm on a Sunday afternoon with the Roosters up 8 - 6 over the Dragons in the NRL Grand Final Yip Yah !
Oh and Panther I wouldn't call West, Peja and Tyson nothing when Paul took the Hornets deep into the West a couple of season ago. Peja , then, was still an perimeter shooting force to be reckoned with , and Chandler flourished with Paul and was a perfect complement to AllStar David West. And they were led by Byron Scott who did well with what he had A drastically different situation to Derrick Rose , albeit Noah has developed well with Rose last year ....but seriously , Vinny and a coaching staff in flux ( Del Harris walked out on us ) and playing big minutes to such luminaries like Hakim Warrick and Flip Murray ...mid season trades in both seasons I mean who was Derrick exactly going to "make better" exactly when he were a functional clusterfuck of Coaching staff and team ? You could make an argument for Luol Deng - but he only had 1 healthy season out of Rose's 2 ( last season) and Vinny had no clue how to use Lu , who, in spite of this and for the fact he and Derrick didn't 100% connect in unison ....Lu turned in an 18 and 7 season just through effort and scap The onus is on Derrick now , with the on floor assets - and a legitimate and stable Coach ..together with his own development on defense in the Worlds and in his J ....to put it all together and make the right calls in whatever it takes to win And if that's him dropping 30 and 5 instead of 18 and 13 then its kind of immaterial.
With the new coaching staff and a better team, I think it's fine that he made his 3 point shot a priority in the offseason. It sounds like we'll be playing inside-out more, and won't be nearly as loosey goosey as we have been in the past. I think we'll see Derrick simply be a part of our half-court offense instead of being the beginning and end of our half court offense this year, to a degree. In that regard, being able to finish plays by hitting the 3 point shot instead of having to iso all the time would be handy. At this point I'm willing to give Derrick the benefit of the doubt. He has a nice shooting touch, and the improvement in his midrange game last year was remarkable, so I think he could make an improvement to his 3 point game similar to what Lu did last year. There's always the chance he could turn into Baron Davis, but Derrick seems like a humble kid who's happy to do what's best for the team.
