I never got why anyone thinks Watson is going to be a PG. He's a poor man's Ben Gordon - a small scoring SG. I hope Thibidibidoo plays his best 5 and if Watson is one of those, so be it.
I thought Ben Gordon was a scoring point guard? Anyway, I find it hard to believe that Watson is going to be the best option among Korver, Brewer and Bogans, but it could be, I suppose. He apparently has some spunk, and an edge to him (some griminess, perhaps). That's a good quality to have on this team, and he's a good partner for D Rose. I've been curious about what his role's going to be. As Denny says, I'm glad they're being open minded and looking for playing time for him in proportion to his talent, and not just pigeon-holing him as backup pg because of his size. He's been the forgotten man, and i don't really know his game, but from what little I've seen, he looks good.
Within reason, size really doesn't matter much for how a guard plays defense. You can't be that physical anymore, so in many cases a shorter but quicker guy has a better chance of staying in front of his opponent than a taller, heavier, slower guy.
I'm going to repeat my comment from another thread. Has anyone ever seen Rose come around a screen and catch and shoot? I never have. FIBA ball showed how hard it is for point guards to play off the ball. Chauncey is a consummate veteran who has played in a ton of situations. He just was not able to catch and shoot after working off screens. It's hard and a completely different motion and skill set. I wouldn't anticipate it's a great way to expend his time.
Apparently Thibs has. From the article TB#1 posted: Well, maybe Thibs didn't actually see it, but he worried about it I think of it less as creating a catch and shoot situation than setting up plays where he's got a clear path to the basket.
Mike's comment was my thought from that thread as well. Looking for ways to give Derrick a clear path instead of facing the double or triple team from the top.
