So first off this is about #1. Usually what I do, unless its a video game that I HAVE to have when it comes out, is wait for it to be cheap on ebay and buy the game for like $15 with Shipping included. The one I am looking at now is Deadrising. Anyone recommend it? I played the demo for #2 and it was a lot of fun, which lead me to checking into this one.
I thought it got kind of monotonous. You would clear an entire area of zombies, enter another room, leave the room to return to the previously cleared area replenished with a horde of zombies.
It is a fun game that is also very frustrating, like most Japanese stuff tends to be. The gameplay is great. Controls are good, its fun to kill zombies and move around the different places in Willamette (sp?), and the characters and story lend themselves well to the wacky experience. But--and this is a huge one--the time-based game mechanic with a single save slot, no checkpoints, and save 'zones' opposed to start menu saves--makes the game very tedious. The game is designed in such a way that you have to play it over because you can't do everything. Unlike quest-based games where you have time to do what you want (such as Mass Effect) at your own pace, in DR you are constantly racing the clock. Maybe it gives you a sense of purpose but at the same time it is harsh. If you mess up a mission you might not have time to do it again so you have to abandon it. Even when you complete missions you will wonder if you should reload the save and do them over again to save more time. It also cuts into your ability to free roam between the major missions and just do what you want. If you're trying to complete all the tasks you will always be hauling ass to get from one point to the next (no quick travel). And you won't get them all. Also the boss battles tend to be a bit monotonous. I have a love/hate relationship with the game. Its fun but it is also really trying at times.
