All day Thursday, during and after morning practice, then back at the team hotel, Spurs big man DeJuan Blair asked his teammates: How big is Houston Rockets center Yao Ming, really and truly? Blair never got a first-hand look at Yao last season, his first in the NBA. The Rockets’ seven-time All-Star sat out the entire slate with a foot injury. To Blair, Yao seemed a myth, a giant whose size seemed more legend than reality. Four minutes and 40 seconds into the Spurs’ preseason game against the Rockets, Blair, 6-foot-7 and 270 pounds, got his first up-close look. Isolated on a defensive switch, Blair was one-on-one in the low post against the NBA’s tallest player, 7-foot-5, 310 pounds and trying to work his way back to All-Star form.
