All signs point to Roy hating America, and he is tanking so he will be released from his contract to go play in Europe with the communists.

Actually, I'd forgotten all about that.

The anger is fueled by Roy's apparent lack of dedication to the pre-season, which was apparent last year as well. Every team knows that the season STARTS with the pre-season; It's when you show you're serious about winning. I just wish we had a team leader who realized that.

I knew Roy was a quitter when he faked his knee injury, had needless surgery, and rushed back from it to play against PHX. I was onto him before all of you!

Pre-season games do not count. They don't even act as a tie-breaker. There is no reason whatsoever to do well in the pre-season. In fact, I place more stock in the practices between games than the games themselves.

This is an "exhibition" season; the only things I've seen carry over from pre-season to regular season are: injuries (Jeff Pendergraph tries plenty hard) and suspensions (remember Mark Bryant punching a guy and missing the first game of the season?). Neither of those are positives.

I'm not worried about Roy because of his slow start, it's preseaon and that's fine by me.

However, it does bother me that last season Roy had a drop in 3point%, FT%, FG%, Steals, Blk's, rebounds, assists and PER. Granted, he was still an excellent player and most of those categories, his decline was minimal, but a lot of little dips adds up. If last season the drop-off was an aberration and he doesn't dip again, or actually improves his play, then great, no problem. But, if our superstar takes another step backward, even a slight one, then the Blazers will be in trouble.

If he takes another step back, Matthews can start in front of him; we have apparently signed his replacement.

For reals man. I'm gonna go ahead and apply for Social Security Disability before the season starts... that way I might have some income by the time 2012 starts. Cause at this rate and my IQ, I'm gonna lose my job

i understand there may be underlining reasons for the statistical dips we saw last season, which is why I never got too nervous and posted tons of threads about the rise and fall of Roy. But he is healthy now, and I was just noting that I sure hope he returns to his previous self, or better. To tell the truth, we just don't know why Roy dipped last season. It could be due to the hammy or other reasons, or it could be due to coasting after an 80 million dollar payday. It could be due to bulking up too much, or how he meshed with Miller. It could be due to personal reasons with his family, or it could be that he practiced less. The point is, we don't know which mix of reasons led to the statistical drop last season. I really am not too worried that the slide will continue since that does not really seem like something a Roy type personality would let happen. But I am just pointing out that I really hope he returns to superstar form.

This is what preseason is for. If Brandon wasn't playing I would be more worried. He'll be fine.

The anger is fueled by his lack of dedication to game that don't count to his professional career or the fortunes of his team? I can't see why I thought that didn't make sense...

No, it doesn't. The hint is in the word: pre-season. That means, before the season. By definition, not part of the season and so not the start of the season. The season starts with the first game of the regular season. It's arbitrary where in the off-season and pre-season you decide that the prep work "gets serious." It's silly to assume that all humans need to begin their preparation for something at exactly the same time.

I was joking about the national anthem. Your anger is fueled by the constant outrage when all people don't conform to your personal ideals. Free psychological insight right there, no need to thank me.

    That's because he's injured and can't take a step.

Making fun of someone with such serious physical problems is below you, MIXUM.

    I'd say it's a combination of

    - not playing basketball over the summer
    - injuries
    - adjusting his play with Miller
    - contract dispute

I also think people forget Roy was playing like a top 5 player before he hurt his hamstring. Pretty much once the injuries started to destroy the team and Roy started getting more and more touches, he averaged 27/5/5 the month of December while shooting 48% from the field. He carried that in to January averaging 24/5/4 on 60% shooting in 7 games.

Roy was playing like a MVP before the hamstring problem last year. I wouldn't be too worried. He'll be fine.

Didn't Roy set a Blazer record for most consecutive games of 20+ points or more last season? That was in the winter, before the hammy injury. I think it was like 18 games in a row or something. Plus, he was doing it efficiently (see vs Miami and vs Lakers)... yeah, I relistened to some games over the summer. :D

If they don't count, why does the coaching staff try to win them? Why is it considered a bad thing to go 0-5 in the preseason? They may not affect the standings, but these games help set the tone for the season to come.

Uh, huh. One piece of advice: don't give up your day job for a career in psychology. You clearly know nothing about it.

Roy's history is that he struggles until he gets into the flow some point early in the season. I seem to remember him struggling each of the previous seasons to get going, but once he got it going it was ok. It's not like Roy hasn't had a lot of good shots to take. He has just missed them. I remember last year people were freaking out because they thought he had lost too much weight and it had thrown off his game. I think about 2 games later he started to look like the Roy we know, and all that talk went away.

On courtside Nate McMillan has said it's nice to win but it isn't important.
