"Right tackle Brandon Keith's job seemed on the line earlier this week when coach Ken Whisenhunt hinted that quarterback wasn't the only position that could undergo personnel changes.

Keith, in his first year as a starter, gave up three sacks in the 41-10 loss to the Chargers and has yielded 4 1/2 this season. But Whisenhunt said he never considered benching Keith in favor of veteran Jeremy Bridges.

"Brandon really has not played that poorly for us this year; that's one game," Whisenhunt said. "We got a number of players like Brandon Keith. They're young players that I think are going to be outstanding football players for us, and we're going to have to grow with them a little bit.

"That's part of going through a transition."

Whisenhunt pointed out several good plays by Keith this season. He threw a key block in a touchdown run against the Falcons and had another on a touchdown that was called back against the Chargers.

"Those plays are lost, because everybody wants to focus on the issues, the problems," Whisenhunt said. "As a staff when we evaluate that, you have to take all those things under consideration."

Keith has struggled in pass protection because of poor footwork and handling noise on the road. At least twice last week, he was beaten off the ball by Chargers outside linebacker Shaun Phillips.

"You learn from it, that's the best thing you can do," Keith said. "It got crazy in there at times. We just tried to do too much to help each other out."

Keith denied that crowd noise affected him."
