Firstly, what do you do if you don't have too good of a shot but have an open shot from a little bit in front of the htree, and no one is open? I got to this situation a couple of times today and couldn't distinguish between being a ball hog or afraid to take open oppurtonities. Also about my shooting, the rim at my house is all crooked and wierd, so when I practice there my shot's on an actual hoop don't go in as often as if i practiced ont hat hoop, need to find a way too play on a normal, and bouncier, hoop.
If I'm understand the first part of your post correctly, my suggestion would either be to shoot it (unless you're pretty sure it won't go in) or try to drive in (depending on how open the lane in front of you is) and go for the lay-up or dish it off if the defense comes to try and block your path.
If you are wide open you should definitely take the shot. They can't say you're a ball hog if there is no one else open.About your hoop problem, I don't know. Get a new hoop or play at a friend's house, community center, etc...

I suggest that you go to a nearby park or a friends house to shoot because I know from experience that it really does affect your shot after youve played on a messed up rim and got comfortable there.
Fix your hoop or get a new one. Practice your shooting motion at home and just keep doing it over and over again. When the game comes I say just don't even think about it. Just do what you practiced at home. If the lane's open go for the layup or else just take a step back and shoot the 3. The best thing is to try not to think about missing it though. For a while my shot wouldn't go in and I kept thinking about it, but I just kept practicing and just didn't think about it too much and just did what I've always practiced and it worked.

If you have a better look than anyone else take it. If your really uncomfortable shooting than maybe drive in and take the layup and if someone goes to guard you dish it out to the man open. I dont see why you think if you take the shot your a ballhog like you say there. Theres no way that makes you a ballhog. Next for your basketball hoop situation just go play at the closest place w/ a decent hoop like a park ora school. You can also save up to by a new one or ask for one for your birthday
I play at my school (we have courts there), but when I get home I still want to play and I shoot on my hoop and mess myself up for school. I think I'm going to just take some time to practice my shot with my friend tommorow. Thanks for the help.
Get a new rim. Save up.And you need to build your confidence, and if youre not already good at shooting practice at that. I dont care if there is a ballhog who can drop shots. It's if you miss I dont like.
A crooked rim can mess up ur shot? No wonder my shot is off everywhere else but at home I do pretty good. I gotta get a new rim. Anyway if u have the open shot take it, or drive to the basket. If ur teammates call u a ballhog tell them that they werent open and taking the shot was the best chance at scoring, Im sure they'll understand that.
LeBron, Kobe, DWade they all take 30 shots and miss and more than half of them usually. Thats what really boosted my confidence and it made me think, I could never be a ball hog unless I take that many shots. If every knows you can shoot, SHOOT! If your in a slump, take it to the rack. But NEVER pass up an open shot, unless you are unathletic, fat, bad

I would much rather get as close as I can to the hoop, a layup is better than a three in my eyes. Since you aren't comfortable shooting the three anyways, and you are wide open, make a move to the hoop like BigMo said, you can then sto[ in a place you are comfortable with and shoot from there or pass it off when the defense collapses on you. You don't even have to do either of those. You could very well just drive to the hoop, make the defense work, and then pull back out and set something up. By doing this you keep the defense honest. You don't really gain anything by jacking up a three (unless you can hit it). You didn't say, so I am just guessing, but you might have been open because your friends know you prolly won't make it, so they will back off of you. They will let you shoot the ball. Don't shoot it, don't worry about them letting you shoot. Use the space they have given you to your advantage. If you are good at dribbling this is the perfect chance to use those skills. Before you make a move, check your defender's foot placement, quickly decide the best route to take to use his footing to your advantage. If you are playing with your friends, you know how they play. You know how they move, think, what risks they take, and whatever other facts about them. Use this to your advantage as well. Let's say your friend likes to gamble a lot on defense, so he reaches in to try and steal the ball a lot. If you are good enough at dribbling (and faster with your hands then your friend is with his), bait him with the ball, show him the ball a little bit on the dribble. keep the ball away from him at first, then bring it over to the side he is guarding you, just enough that you are still in control, when he seems like he is about to make a move, cross-over and get around him, depending on how bad he went after the bait, you may have bought enough time to get to the hoop. Once you get in your layup range, try and take your first step (you get 1 and a half steps) right after the defender's feet, then use your half step to pull away from the defender.Just my thoughts. Also, if the rim is bugging you (it sounds like it is) don't play on it anymore. If you get home and want to play basketball, just practice your dribbling and accuracy with the ball.
