If his attitude is something that you dont wanna deal with come contract time, then why would we wanna deal with it? I assume hes gonna be asking for like 10-15 a year...and hes not THAT good to warrant that. His potential isnt even that high seeing thats hes not exceptionally athletic. Idk...
Well, if he's good across the board, and especially is a good defender and three point shooter (he is), then he's a pretty good guy to contemplate getting here. I think the obvious problem, as always, is what would the Griz be looking for in return? I think it'd be pretty difficult for the Bulls to get a deal done since the Griz are usually looking for cheap players, and because our most obvious trade asset, Luol, is both expensive and plays the same position as the expensive guy they just locked in. Still, I could see this going somewhere based on the following idea. It's not for real yet, just Sam Smith addmitted speculation. So ok, lets say as the season goes on 1. The Griz are OK with Henry, so moving Mayo is an option. 2. The Griz are looking for a replacement for Zach Randolph, whose deal is expiring but who they sure aren't gonna extend at close to the same price. 3. Taj has had a couple solid months filling in for Boozer. Maybe come December something like Taj, Charlotte pick, and change starts to look reasonable?
They act like they didnt play Rudy at the 2 BEFORE they got OJ. So giving them Deng shouldnt be a problem for them. Rudy's gonna get his shots either way and at least with Deng you have a good defender on the wing
Taj , Charlotte pick + CJ Watson is a no brainer Assuming we have pick up Dampier and can have he and Kurt backing up Noah , Boozer and Asik as the front 3 in the rotation then Taj is surplus. I know that Neil Funk has cast a bizzare spell over a lot of Bulls Fans ...especially on RealGM ....as to all that is good and holy is Taj- but hey , when it all boils down he is just a mediocre 2nd year player that is 137 years old
Oh... 1. Taj may have more market value then Joakim 2. James Johnson has no basketball IQ 3. Joakim took his contract on the suggestion from a plogger ( poster / blogger ) because of a lock out possibility would mean lower salaries ....and there is no way that Joakim could have got this advice from his team of advisors and arrived at the conclusion on his own. 4.Sam Smith is dumb 5. All journalists everywhere don't have their own ideas and read message boards , in particular , unrealgm , and steal ideas to regurgitate that emanate from all the wise old sages that post there. Thanks for this small sample size of mantras of which there are many more unrealgm !
I'd say Mayo still has a lot of potential, and if he could be had on the cheap, hell ya, but not if Memphis wants a lot and certainly not if he thinks he's worth 10-15 million.
Well they are invested in Gay and I could see them investing decent dollars in Marc Gasol I see them letting Randolph march . Mayo too It does make sense for them to deal Mayo while on his rookie contract rather than take back nominally higher salary that they would need to do to facilitate the type of money we might seek in a sign and trade They already are covered at the 2 with Henry and Allen and Sam Young is a decent back up at the 3 behind Gay. To give them a role playing starter at the 4 in Gibson behind where they are featured in Gasol and Gay makes some sense - as does a scoring combo in Watson and the upside of the Charlotte pick to compensate in the talent differential between Mayo and Gibson. Mayo makes some sense for us at around $9M on average - IE a $45M 5 year deal which is what I reckon his FMV is.. this is on the presumption that Papa Reinsdorf believes we're a contender and is prepared to pay for a winner that looks like : Noah Boozer Deng Mayo Rose bench Asik / Vet minimum big Thomas/Johnson Korver Brewer Weaver/Vet minimum point That's a $75M team The question is : Do we need to exceed a projected hard cap at $66M by the $9M cost of OJ Mayo to be a contender ? And are we more a contender if we do this ? Or ... Is the deal to do ...offering up Taj, Watson and JJ + a Bulls 1st rounder for OJ and have OJ go with Deng and the Charlotte pick and a future Bulls 1st rounder to Denver for Melo and Aron Affalo ? Noah Boozer Anthony Affalo Rose bench Asik/Vet role big Thomas Korver Brewer Weaver I mean this is roughly the same cost when you increase Anthony's cost to Deng and discount Affalo's cost to Mayo ( about $4M in each discount ) I would suggest the latter scenario makes us more a title contender than simply swinging for OJ Mayo Therefore ... I probably wouldn't be inclined to trade for OJ in isolation and wear the cost which I believe is an inefficient spend I would however try and trade for him and use him as a feature in a 3 way with Denver That deal does put us in the championship mix moreso IMO
Memphis would go into next season look like Gasol/ Thabeet Gibson/Arthur Gay/Young Henry/Allen/Watson Conley/ Lottery Pick /Watson Throw in 3 role playing vets around the strong spot, wing and guard - and this is around a $48m team built on the draft and a youth movement which is probably appropriate ( financially ) for more a college ball led town like Memphis
I like either deal, FJ. As it stands now, we're very similar to last year's Utah Jazz, which is a good team but not quite there when it comes to being a contender.
FJ, are you saying OJ would kill our salary cap position? I dunno. Deng $13M + OJ $8M vs. Melo $18M + Korver? $5M? I'd go with Melo and Korver too, I think. I guess I can't get too fired up over OJ, but I also have a hard time figuring out how a 3 way would work in practice. Don't really know what the Griz want at this point
