"The Rangers were upset at blowing a late lead thanks to a questionable late penalty call.

And Sean Avery was questioning whether there will be equal justice in the NHL after Islanders defenseman James Wisniewski made an obscene hand-to-mouth gesture toward him during the Isles' 6-4 win Monday afternoon before a paltry 11,748 at Nassau Coliseum.

"It's pretty obvious what the guy was doing," said Avery, who was separated from Wisniewski in front of the Islanders' net at 5:09 of the first period. "But I am sure nothing will happen. Because nothing ever happens.

"It's interesting he'd get a warning for something like that," Avery added. "Can you imagine what would happen if I did that? [Heck], they sent me to rehab."

Wisniewski could be facing a suspension and fine from this Columbus Day incident, but the NHL would not comment on whether it was reviewing the play. Commission Gary Bettman, in attendance, said the Hockey Operations Department headed by ex-Rangers coach Colin Campbell would determine any punishment.

Avery, then with the Stars in 2008, initially was suspended indefinitely and ultimately sent to behavioral therapy for comments directed at Dion Phaneuf regarding his ex-girlfriend Elisha Cuthbert.

Wisniewski would not comment on the incident other than to say, at first, he could not remember what he did. Then he added what happens on the ice should stay on the ice. Islanders coach Scott Gordon stormed out of his press conference when pressed on the matter.

"I never talk about Sean Avery," said Gordon, though the question was specifically about Wisniewski.

Meanwhile, Rangers coach John Tortorella was upset with a tripping call against Ryan Callahan at 14:15 of the third period as he and Islanders defenseman Mike Mottau raced back on a possible icing."
